The hottest fashion trend in Vietnam
When you come to Vietnam, you will surely be taken aback by the fashionable uniformity of people there. Almost all Vietnamese are big fans of a product from a mighty fashion revolution in the 20th century- plastic bag.
You may find the way I call plastic bag as a fashion product very ridiculous, but nothing can depict the popularity of plastic bag in Vietnam rather than the hottest fashion trend in the history that no haute couture could achieve. Oh, plastic bag! How magic it is! Only a delicate bag that can tempt a whole population to fancy it. Vietnamese use plastic bag everywhere, every time and for every purpose from a luxury mall to a run-of-the-mill market from day to night. Vietnamese people nearly can't live without plastic bag. You may wonder why but please ponder again, maybe you will can also be pulled to that craze. Just stuff, wrap and tie, you are ready to carry their parcel anywhere in the most convenient way. And when a plastic bag has fulfilled its mission, just dump it! Oh don't hesitate, despite of being a trendy product, it is cheap, extremely cheap so dump it for your sake.
Oh, plastic bag! How magic it is! Only a delicate bag that can ruin this whole world. Every time you dump a fragile plastic bag, you are committing a crime of releasing chemical toxic to Mother Earth. And as my word, all Vietnamese are accused of the most devil crime- changing this world into a dystopian one. Vietnam is famous for its magnificent mountains of frost, flowers and also plastic bags. Tons and tons of plastic bags are scattered across my country every single day. Many valleys, mountains, rivers are wrapped by a thick layer of plastic bag.
When passing a plastic bags mountains and rivers, I often wonder myself :"What sort of actions can be taken to change the attitude of Vietnamese toward plastic bag?". This is not a normal habit once more, it has penetrated to most deepest of Vietnamese's consciousness, it passes from generations to generations. I had only done some trivial things like delivering free handmade non-plastic bags. Although knowing that kind of action can not address much this issue, but I hope that my action will inspire more people surrounding me to change themselves. The only solution now have to come from the government, the authorities, but don't know if they are also the fandom of plastic bags?

Linh, thank you for the report. I am glad you find it highly problematic. I think you could go on thinking more or doing some research on plastic bags in Vietnam. What are the fundamental reason lying behind? Is there any reason that forces Vietnamese to use plastic bags? You could organiz your own campaign or find some others who share similar viewpoints.

Hi Linh!! The title of this article confused me at first glance haha but soon now I'm on a right track:)
Your article was more than interesting for me! The excessive and uncontrolled use of plastic bags is very problematic in many countries, but i didn't notice that Vietnam is being suffered from this issue a lot more serious than others.
I hope your governments soon realize the seriousness of the problem and move!
Thanks for your post again!

Plastic is not biodegradable. Most plastic does not ever disappear, but becomes long-lasting 'plastic dust'. When items like plastic bags break down, they readily soak up (and release) toxins that then contaminate soil and water, as well as harm animals that ingest plastic fragments. Production of plastic uses petroleum which itself plays a harmful role in polluting the environment. I mean, plastic, by no means do us any good then why get used to them, why fancy them. I feel there is a need of aggressive campaigns promoting reusable bag and 'Say no to plastic bag'. Like here in UK, consumers have to pay at retails or shops to get plastic bag. This discourages people to waste plastic bag. Most of the people carry their reusable bags to avoid buying plastic bags.
Your act of distributing reusable bags is appreciable and no act is small when done in the right direction. Hope your government takes some bold steps and bans plastic bags.
Thanks for sharing.
