After the meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, presided by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Nigerian government has approved a Revised National Policy on Environment. The policy seeks to capture some of the emerging problems in environment matters. The Revised National Policy on Environment presents a new policy framework for approaching environmental issues. These issues include climate change, coastal erosion, desertification, erosion, pollution and insecurity which have been exacerbated by the struggles for environment resources.
A greater part of the new policy on environment sees partnership with the private sector and with the communities as absolutely essential to the sustainability of our environment. It focuses on the importance of funding of renewable energy which is a big opportunity for the country exit out of fossil fuels.
The policy will go a long way in addressing the effects of climate change in Nigeria that affect the population. These include desertification and coastal erosion which affect those in the Northern and Southern region respectively. Both occur as a result of rising global temperatures. This has led to water scarcity and drought in the Northern part of the country and flooding in the South. The country needs to turn towards renewable energy. Therefore, the new policy is a welcome development.

What was the old National Policy on Environment was like? Why did it have to be revised? How is the Revised Policy carried out? I f the current Revised Policy still has a problem what is it?
