ATMOSPHERIC PARTICULATE MATTER: AIR POLLUTION IN BALI ISLAND

by | 30-03-2017 23:41 recommendations 1

As we all know, air is one of the most important component of the most fundamental environment to support life living creatures, including humans. Nowadays, the quality of our air has been decreasing. Sources of air pollution may come from any activities such as transports, industries, offices and housings. These activities provide a very large contribution towards air pollution in a region. Nature activities also contribute to air pollution, such as forest fires, volcanic eruptions, natural gas etc. In short and long term, air pollution has negative impacts on human health.

As an island that is famed for its natural beauty, Bali is also one of the most polluted place in Indonesia. Denpasar is the capital city of Bali island that becomes a must-visit-city for tourists, both domestic and foreign. Denpasar has so many interesting natural sceneries and unique cultures that can attract many tourists from different countries to travel to this place. However, this also has impacts on environmental issues, such as environmental pollution, environmental sanitation and damage to the environment that may threaten its natural beauty and environmental sustainability.

Based on a report in 2008, the city of Denpasar has a decreasing point in air quality. This is partly due to the transportation and industrial activities such as industrial power generation, chemical, general building materials, as well as crafts and metal. The main cause of air pollution in the city of Denpasar is transport activities. This is evidenced by the increase in the volume of vehicles rose significantly in the last six-year period with an increase of 7% for each year.

What small things we can do to prevent air pollution in our city:

  •         Using Public Transportation: Carbon emissions increases in proportion with the increase in the vehicle. Market auto industry shows the rising curve. This means increasing the use of fuel. The results of burning these fuel produces carbon compounds (carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide) or even metals such as lead (black smoke) and soot, which is very dangerous.
  •         Reforestation: We can help our government by planting more trees. You can plant more trees or vegetables or flowers in your garden as well. More trees mean more oxygen to breath. Air pollution will decrease as plants are capable of reducing the  carbon compounds in the air.
  •         Don't burn your garbage: People in Denpasar are still having a 'habit' of burning their garbage, producing toxic gases. This causes air pollution. It is better to sort your garbage out and send them to the Waste Bank near your house. Less garbage means less pollution.

Let's green our city by doing small things we can do.

Patricia, thank you for your report. I see the increase of vehicles is causing the problem in Denpasar. It seems like it is one of the difficulties every civilization has to go through. Among your suggestions I believe reforestation is what every nation should focus on. If you write any report about reforestation I would happily read it.
