Bottle house in Malaysia

Conservation effort: A worker putting plastic bottles together as the Bottle House of Pulau Libaran slowly takes shape.

Count 1, 2, 3.

As you count for the 3 numbers, 4500 plastics bottle are thrown away in America. [1] To make it worse, only 25 percent of the the plastic bottles are recycled. [2] Every single day, Americans have wasted 50 millions plastic bottles without actually thinking on recycling them [3], turning trash into treasure. These "treasures" are worth more than a billion Dollars [4] and yet no one do something about it.

The good news is - there are many ways to reduce, reuse and recycle the bottles. Let me share an interesting news in Malaysia, we are building bottle house. Yes, it is the house which is made by plastic bottles. And yes, it really happening! The plastic bottles collected will be use to make a 300sq-ft house in Kota Kinabalu.

According to Alexenda Yee, managing director of the Trekkers Lodge, the house will be use as a gallery to educate visitors on beach cleaning and turtle conservation. [5] It all started with a complaint by local about the turtle eggs in his land were stolen by other villagers. This complaint eventually lead Yee to realize the amount of plastic bottles thrown and kick start the project.

This bottle house is a good example on how to recycle and reuse in a very creative and effective way. Plastic bottles are strong, durable, rust resist and insulator for electric. Maybe we can use these properties of plastic bottles as the tips for recycling and reusing them.

Lastly, lets make the Earth a greener place. =)

Cheng, thank you for your report. Strong introduction! I think I have never seen a bottle house before. I was wondering at first if one can live in there, but it seems like it is not for dwelling in. Still I believe a bottle house as a gallery would attract people. I wish to read more about the bottle house. If it happens to be built more, please tell us what is happening.

Thanks for shedding a light on this issue, Cheng. I have seen a lot of ideas on how to recycle plastic waste, including building houses with it. In Netherlands, they use their plastic waste to build roads. In Sweden, the recycling is so revolutionary that the country ran out of waste and had to import waste from neighbouring countries.

Recycling plastic bottles is very important & it has become very easy these days. USA is well equipped to recycle each bottle, much more than any other country in the world. Its' sad that the same is not done. Bottle hut is eye-catching.
