Land Mines

Afghan officials said on Monday that Hundreds of square kilometers of landmines and battlefields have yet to be cleared in Afghanistan.
The head of Afghanistan natural disaster management authority, said of 3,600 square km of landmines in the country, 2500 square km were cleared in recent years.
Addressing an event to mark international day for mine awareness and Assistance in mine action almost a week later, Barmak said that there was an increase in casualties caused by landmines in the country last year. 
He added that the Demining authority in Afghanistan laid of 5,000 workers due to lack of budget.
Afghanistan is one of the worlds's heavily mined countries. According to officials, more than 140 people are killed each month due to explosion of mines.
During the arranged event, a U.N Official said that great achievements were made over the past 20 years in Afghanistan, adding they process was continuing to get the country free of landmines.
Meanwhile, Nasir Ahmad Andesha, the deputy foreign minister, said that most of the mines get into the country from neighboring countries.
The mine Action programme of Afghanistan is seeking approximately ( $117 Million ) for 2017 to implement full scaled activities as it aims to declare Afghanistan free of mines by 2030.

    Obaid, thank you for your report. The Photos tell us alot. I knew that therer are mines in some countries, but I never knew so many people are still dying from it. I am glad that the mines will be cleared by 2030, but still it sounds a bit too far. Please tell us time to time how the government's plan is going and also if you find any new actions, initiatives, that would be worth writing about.
