Water Pollution in the UAE – Non-Existent

by Rohan Kapur | 18-04-2017 19:39 recommendations 1

Water is life. All creatures on Earth requires water for their survival. It is the most essential component and basic construction unit in the structure of a cell. We humans also cannot survive without water. Therefore, it is most essential that pollution in water to be kept under check.

UAE is very active & responsible nation and it takes care of all environmental pollution very seriously. The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi had been monitoring beaches in Abu Dhabi city since 2006, testing for 39 pollutants and parameters, including microbial contaminants of public health concern, heavy metals, nutrient pollution and organic compounds. They have confirmed that menace of water pollution has not affected UAE till date. No industrial or sewage disposal is carried out in the sea. There are heavy penalties for throwing garbage in the sea. UAE treats the sewage water & use this treated water for huge landscaping sprawling all over the country. Industrial waste is also treated before disposing off in sewers. The municipality keeps a tight control over the same. As a scientific sample, an Ariel picture of Al Ain take on 29-Nov-72 has been compared with another shot of the same place taken on 25-Sep-06. A huge green patch is significantly visible showing the vast landscaping that has taken place in last 34 years of the picture. [Pic courtesy Khaleej Times, link given below]

Some students of UAE University in Al Ain have developed a portable device to check the water pollution levels. There is no need to take the water sample to the lab. The tests may be carried out at the site itself. This device is basically used to test household waste water. Sometimes this water is used in fields or on roadside plants and if it is polluted than this may become a potential hazard to human health. Full article link is provided below.

A small table is given below to depict limits of Harmful Chemical Elements in water:

Element

Chemical

Max limit MG

Arsenic

As

0.05

Cadmium

Cd

0.01

Cyanide

CN

0.05

Lead

Pb

0.1

Mercury

Hg

0.001

Selenium

Se

0.01

This is very handy table to monitor the water pollution levels.

The drinking water supply companies are also strictly monitored and there is no reported case of water pollution in drinking water in the UAE.

But in many countries of the world this is a major issue. Lack of legislations, lack of public will & loose implementation of rules may be sited as some examples that lead to higher pollution levels of water.

Thank you Rohan for your report. Rapid pace of development in UAE has caused some reasons of concern in the near past, with respect to instances of water pollution but yes, the UAE government is taking all necessary measures, with a strong action plan to control the pollution. Involvement of public, and students in particular, is also contributing to solving the problem.

Thanks Han. There are no rivers in the UAE. There are only Gulf of Oman & Arabian Sea touching its borders. . They do not dump any waste into water thus pollution will not happen.

Rohan, thank you for the report. It is unbelievable that UAE almost has no problem with water pollution! You mentioned several factors for that. Strong monitoring, strict laws. I wonder, however, if there is something else that makes UAE a nation with out water pollution, because many other nations have laws, monitor and so on, but has a serious problem. If you find any special aspect of UAE which contributes to clean water, please write more about it.
