Waste Segregation Project - Part 3

by Sudarshan Sreeram | 14-05-2017 15:27 recommendations 1

In continuation to the report "Waste Segregation Part - 2", in this report I will be presenting the initiatives taken by the residents of my apartment.

Green Waste:
Our main aim was to promote and educate our fellow residents about waste segregation. Hence, we circulated the waste segregation chart and distributed the bins and bags (red, green, and white). To process the organic waste collected from the green bin, a composting pulverizer was utilized. One may ask what a composting pulverizer is? To put it in simple words, a composting pulverizer is a mechanical device that is used for the grinding of organic waste to produce compost. During the grinding process, shredded papers and coconut husks were added in order to help make the compost dry. This was done to avoid fungal growth in the compost because green waste usually has high water content. This compost is further dried under the sun after collection from the pulverizer. The dried compost was used in our apartment garden (please have a look at the images shown below).

Compost pit is a method of composting underground and proves to be a neat and tidy way to produce compost. Steps involved in using the compost pit method:
  • A pit is created in the ground
  • The waste is dumped inside the pit
  • The pit is watered regularly in order to maintain moisture levels which promote the growth of beneficial microbes
  • The mixture is turned once a week so that it remains aerated
This process is incorporated in our apartment for processing garden waste, for example: dried leaves, twigs, cut grass, etc. (please have a look at the images shown below)

Red Waste:
The waste collected in the red bins are not recyclable and is hence collected by the corporation for dumping in the landfill.

White Waste:
In India, there are many organisations which help residents with the management of recyclable waste. In our apartment, the waste collected in the white bag is managed by "kuppathotti.com". This organisation helps people throw away and get money for their household waste and this method encourages people to segregate and dispose waste in a cleaner and greener way though it takes continuous effort to reinforce it everyday as a part of one's lifestyle.

Hi Sudarshan! What a great initiative! I've read your two previous reports, and I'm really surprised to see its progree:) I especially liked the idea of producing natural compost and consume it in an apartment so that the residents get to see the impact of their effort.

Sudarshan, thank you for your report. I cannot believe this initiative is organized by the residents. It seems highly effective and well working. I wish the initiative spreads. If you write more follow up stories, I am sure the other ambassadors would enjoy reading.
