Electric Cars in UAE

by Neha Swaminathan | 15-05-2017 01:39 recommendations 0

A new incentive program has been launched on 10 May 2017 by the UAE Ministry of Energy. This is done with the goal of making people buy new zero-carbon-emissions electric vehicles by giving green bank loans, green insurance plans, attractive EV car prices and green registration of vehicles.

The Minister of Energy Suhail Al Mazroui said during the launch that the new platform dubbed "Incentives for Using Electric Vehicles" will make it necessary to change 10 per cent of car fleets of federal ministries and agencies to be electric vehicles. And further raise it soon to twenty per cent of government fleets. Al Mazroui said "We are working on a road map to expedite a 15 per cent reduction by 2020 of carbon emissions."

Dubai Supreme Council of Energy ratified an incentive programme to promote the use of electric cars in Dubai. The decision was made by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, and Dubai Municipality at the 45th meeting of the Supreme Council of Energy.

The new platform also assists consumers by making available financing facilities with banks, car companies and insurance firms in addition to educating buyers on the benefits of going green to reduce greenhouse gases in the UAE.

The Supreme Council issued instructions that government institutions must ensure that 10 per cent of all new purchases of fleet vehicles are of hybrid or electric vehicles. The target for 2020 of all vehicles to be hybrid or electric is 2% of all vehicles in Dubai and to raise it further to 10 per cent by 2030.

Hi Naha! Thanks for introducing great initative regarding electic cars in UAE.
Since electic car industry is sill in an early stage, i think the role of government is extremely important untill the industry becomes stable. Thanks again for sharing!

Neha, thank you for your report. Electric cars are our future, I believe, yet not widespread. UAE's measure could be a trigger. Let's see where and when electric cars get to run on streets most.

Great job UAE. Giving loans to the people to motivate them in buying pollution free vehicles is a great job.
