Save Son Doong

Son Doong is the world's largest cave located in a National Park of Vietnam and a World Heritage of UNESCO. This underground kingdom is so big it has its own weather, landscape, and ecosystem with jungles, waterfalls, rivers, hills, and many rare flora and fauna species. This 5-million-year-old hidden wonder has just been recently discovered. But like any other wonder found by humankind, the cave is facing the threat of being exploited.

What is the problem?

A cable car project is being considered, which can bring in up to 1000 tourists an hour (equivalent to 1-1.5 million per annum). That is a huge increase in tourism traffic, given the current trekking permit quota to this cave is only 1000 a year. Like how mass tourism has destroyed numerous Natural & Cultural Heritage sites around the world, this cable car project poses a threat to the sensitive ecosystem and the fragile structure of the cave.

Despite of not being to this cave, I can not bear to see it be destroyed. So I have donated for the campaign name "Save Son Doong" which is a group of Vietnamese environmental activists, who have been advocating for the conservation of Son Doong for the past three years. They've built a loyal fan base of more than 175,000 followers on Facebook and organized numerous offline events, from movie screening, photo exhibition, to workshops, conferences, debate forums, competitions, etc, including meeting President Obama. Beside, I also convince my friends to participate in this campaign with me and happily, nearly two thirds of my classmates have donated to "Save Son Doong".

I also write this report to call for the support of you- environmental ambassadors. Son Doong is not only the natural site of Vietnam but it is a heritage of this world. So please conspire us to protect this gift of nature.

wow! this is so exciting? but the mere fact that a lot of people have started getting there day in and out am just feeling so awful. And i guess they should just have strict policies to guard this treasure... it looks like paradise. for sustainability i think some things should just be put at a stand still. I stand with the hashtag #saveSonDoong. Thanks for sharing

Linh, thank you for your report. The largest cave in the world, with its own ecosystem, 5-million-year-old hidden wonder! Wow! An irony always comes with these amazing treasures. Should we just perfectly keep it away from people and open it only for scholars or should we let people enjoy it. I wish we could find a balance.
