Nuclear Waste Recycle Plan in Japan

by Nanami Nishihara | 25-05-2017 15:49 recommendations 0

Since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster triggered by the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami occurred, nuclear waste problem has been one of the most difficult issues in Japanese politics.

On May 17, the Environment Ministry announced that they started to test a new method to recycle radioactive soil to reduce nuclear waste.

The ministry plans to create a mound using radioactive soil. Such mounds could be used, for example, as foundations for seawalls and roads in Fukushima Prefecture and elsewhere.

Safety concern has been raised, but the government seeks to move nuclear waste outside Fukushima prefecture by 2045, and this new method will be able to help to achieve this goal.

Thank you Nanami for highlighting this issue. Earthquake prone areas must consider highly earthquake resistant means of storing and disposing nuclear waste to avoid leakage.
