The Paris Agreement set out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2?C. The Paris Climate Change Agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, with 197 parties.

Mr. Buhari signed the Paris Agreement on Sept. 22, 2016 on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly, saying it ?demonstrated Nigeria?s commitment to a global effort to reverse the effects of the negative trend?. President Muhammadu Buhari, signed the agreement in 2016 in New York, thus making Nigeria the 146th country to endorse it.

In March, Nigeria ratified the agreement that aimed to avoid the most devastating effects of climate change by cutting carbon emissions.

By signing the agreement, Mr. Buhari committed Nigeria to reducing ?Green House Gas Emissions unconditionally by 20 per cent and conditionally by 45 per cent? in line with Nigeria?s Nationally Determined Contributions.

The president also signed the instrument of ratification of the agreement on March 28, making the country one of those that had ratified the agreement. The Federal Government on Sunday expressed disappointment over the decision by President Donald Trump to pull the U.S. out of Paris climate agreement.

In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry?s spokesman, Dr Clement Aduku, restated Nigeria?s commitment to the accord.

The ministry said ?the Paris Climate deal was intended for the common good of humanity and benefit of our planet.

?Therefore, Nigeria, alongside other countries which are signatories to the Paris Climate Accord, shall continue to implement her commitment under the Paris Climate Agreement.

?This is reasonable and in line with our President?s Commitment to the Accord.?

World leaders have condemned Trump?s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement. It is a relief to know that other nations are willing to fulfill commitments to the agreement.

Adaora, thank you for your report. One could well grasp a timeline of Nigeria getting into the Paris Agreement through this article. As you've mentioned it is for the humanity and this planet. I feel relieved that there are numerous nations which still support the agreement and I just wish the US government or President Trump changes their mind, which seems hopeless though.

Hi Adaora! Thanks for sharing your report on Paris agreement and Nigeria's action.
As you mentioned, US administration's decision shocked all the other nations. Hope there would be no following withdrawls from other contries. We should all work together to keep the Paris agreements activated.
