Sea Turtle

Indonesia is a home for six out of seven sea turtle species in the world. The reason behind this is because Indonesia?s environment is a suitable place to nest and to find food for these sea turtles. Besides that, Indonesia is an important route for migrating to sea turtle since Indonesia resides at the intersection of the Pacific and the Indian oceans. Even so, the population for these six sea turtles species is recorded as vulnerable and endangered. The main threat that is being faced is destruction of habitat and nesting grounds, along with capturing, illegal trafficking and exploitation that endangers the environment.

Sea turtle can be found in the ocean from all over the world, and even though they have lived their whole lives in the water, these reptiles still needs to breathe air at the surface occasionally since they breath using lungs.

Sea turtle lay eggs only every 2 – 8 years, where they would come to the beach 4 – 7 times to lay their eggs. This is of course done by female sea turtles, whereas males sea turtles will spend its whole lifetime in the sea. When a female sea turtle wants to lay its eggs, they will search a beach that is deserted from human and from noisy noises as well as light. Every time they lay eggs, hundreds of eggs would fill up a hole that the female sea turtle previously dug with its hind fin. If the female turtle feel threatens when she is trying to lay her eggs, she would abandon her mission in laying her eggs and return to the sea.

Hundreds of eggs that is laid by a female sea turtle would only hatch a few baby sea turtles that has successfully reached the ocean and grow up. This is caused by human that hunts these sea turtle, and because of natural predation, such as crab, birds, mice on land, and many more big fish that threatens the baby sea turtle into reaching deep waters.

Sea turtle itself has a lot of benefit for human lives. They help in growing economy through fishery sector, keeping balance in the ecosystem, as well as helping spread nutrition in the sea through its feces. These feces will become soil or food for plants and animals living in the sea.

Since sea turtle also feed on jellyfish, sea turtle help other fishes grow. This reason is due to the fact that jellyfish feed on baby fishes, so if jellyfish are decreased by sea turtles, there will be an increase in fishes.

The government has made captive breeding for sea turtles on islands in Indonesia. I've also visited some, like in Pramuka Island, Bali Island, and also Derawan Island. I say it is quiet successful, since baby sea turtle can grow stronger here. They are protected from human hunting it, although how these sea turtle will survive in the sea is a different story..

Ida, thank you for your report. It is amazing that six out of seven turtle species are from Indonesia. Indonesia must have beautiful marine environment. So if their habitat is under some threat, what does the government plan to do? Is it being successful?
