Global Warming & Snowpiercer

The movie Snowpiercer is currently attracting millions of fans not just in Korea but around the world. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the movie is about a train named ?Snowpiercer? that travels around the world after the strike of an ice age. It illustrates the stark difference between the lives of the people on board the train, who are the last survivors of the ice age. I watched this movie a week ago, and was interested in the ecological and environmental aspects of the movie.

To begin with, the movie starts as scientists develop a cooling agent called CW-13. It is intended to stop the progress of global warming. Filled with expectations to cool the earth, leaders around the world agree to utilize the agent at United Nations. However, the CW-13 brings a totally unexpected result: it is so powerful that it literally freezes the globe. Although there are some logical flaws, I think that the movie clearly demonstrated the results of stopping global warming through artificial solutions.

Currently, various solutions are being developed to stop or delay global warming. Some of them are burying tanks filled with greenhouse gases in the ocean, or blocking the sun ray using man-made shields. However, we cannot fully predict the results of these solutions, and it is highly possible that they might cause problems even more serious than global warming, just like the ice age that I mentioned above. Furthermore, these artificial solutions will only be effective for a very short period, and won?t be able to prevent global warming entirely. Therefore, I believe that simply reducing the emission of greenhouse gases if the best and most fundamental solution to global warming.

Another thing that the movie illustrated very well was a passive ecosystem. Passive ecosystems are ecosystems that are completely separated from surrounding areas, just like the Sonwpiercer which does not have access the outside world. An interesting thing is that there have been numerous experiments before about passive ecosystems. Unlike scientists? predictions, these passive ecosystems turned out to be unsustainable. This can also be clearly seen in the movie itself, where the train fails to sustain the live of every single passenger, which leads to a rebellion. I think this clearly shows that humankind cannot live without nature.

Overall, I think the movie was quite interesting, and was especially satisfied because it showed various aspects related to global warming and the environment.
