Here we go for the second news about water conflicts!!><

As current society is facing numerous problems regarding water resources, occurrences of armed conflicts regarding water resources are also increasing and intensifying rapidly. Fully alarmed by this situation, the executive board of the Security Council has chosen the topic stated above as the agenda of the upcoming conference.

Over 300 international rivers in the world range over at least two countries. In the drainage area of those international rivers, about 50 countries are situated and 35% to 40% of the international population is dwelling. This is the main reason of the majority of water resources breakouts, and the decrease of those conflicts is not being expected.

As Global Warming keeps intensifying and worldwide climate is undergoing revolutionary change, the importance of water resources is also skyrocketing. Where we should pay more attention is the situation of countries in the Middle East and Africa. As the territory of thus countries is located in desert region mostly, its climate and environmental surroundings which has not enough water and naturally, avoiding conflicts between nations sharing an international river is close to impossible. If the conflict intensifies, it will proceed to armed conflicts.

The water conflicts can be separated in local and international parts.

One of the examples of the local water conflict takes place at the Colorado River in western USA. The river is the main resource to get water supplies for many states such as Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Baja California, Sonora, and Colorado. The river lies on not only USA?s states but Mexico. It also reached its stream on the part of Mexico which makes the situation more urgent.

Most of the international water conflicts occur in Middle East and Africa, the area suffering in insufficiency of water.

The Tigris and Euphrates River run through Turkey, Syria, and Iraq which means it is a great cause of a lot of conflicts which occurred between those countries. In 1960s, Syria had announced that it?ll construct many dams for the purpose of irrigation and waterpower generation. As a response, Iraq threatened to attack the dams in 1970s. The incident that showed the power of controlling the water supplies can be deadly was the construction of Ataturk dam. Turkey government was the one instructed the project. Turkey had build dams in both Euphrates and Tigris River without the permission of Israel and Syria. Turkey had even threatened to lower the water level of the river to Syria.

Interesting though sad. We have such water conflicts in India as well. e.g. The sharing of waters of the Kaveri has been the source of a serious conflict between the Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
