Rainwater Harvesting

by Neha Swaminathan | 26-07-2017 12:27 recommendations 0

Rainwater Harvesting is a way of saving the rainwater which would normally flow off down the drain. The collected rainwater can be used for flushing toilets, watering plants, floor and car washing etc instead of using potable or drinking water.

Implementing rainwater harvesting helps reduce use of existing water supply as well as reducing run-off, erosion, and contamination of surface water.

For rain water harvesting, a storage tank is fitted to roof drain pipes, and the water flowing down the drains is fed through a filter to remove leaves and other matter. The storage tank can be placed under ground from where it can be pumped around. It is fairly simple to setup and can be used in homes, offices, commercial places, hospitals etc.

Rainwater harvesting has been in practice even from ancient civilizations.

In ancient Tamil Nadu (India), rainwater harvesting was done by Chola kings. Rainwater from the Brihadeeswarar temple was collected in Sivaganga tank. In modern times, this is practiced across the world in many countries

In India, rain water harvesting was first introduced by Andhra Pradesh, however got neglected later. In the state of Tamil Nadu, rainwater harvesting was made compulsory for every building to avoid ground water depletion. Within last 10 years, this has shown remarkable results in raising ground water levels by 50% and many other states in India took it as role model. The water quality also improved very much.

Water will be there only if we share the available water and if we are to save it using such techniques like Rainwater harvesting. It should be adopted everywhere to save precious water and reduce demands on drinking water.

Neha, thank you for your report. Interesting topic! I believe this is the first article about rainwater harvesting here. If you happen to find some photos of it, please upload them as well for other ambassadors!

Hi again Neha! Thanks for introducing interesting concept of rain harvesting. The name is very smart:)
As fresh water is getting more scarce, it is important to find ways to reuse water and look for clean water source. In Korea, rain harvesting is getting more attention and one city redesigned its drainage and sewege system to collect and reuse rain. Thanks for great report!

Here in UAE also they do rainwater harvesting. The water level is all dams has considerably risen this year. Well reported.

Lovely report. Rainwater harvesting provides self-sufficiency to water supply. It is disheartened that there are areas where this is illegal. For instance, some U.S states have laws that actively criminalization collection/harvesting of rainwater.

Well pointed out Neha. Rainwater harvesting is an easy and convenient way to meet the water demands of our urban areas as also agricultural demands. It can substantially reduce the pressure on our water systems. In UAE currently the rainwater is collected on a large scale through rainwater harvesting pools around which public landscaped areas are developed. The government is also committed to developing water resources, avoiding risks of floods by harvesting rainwater with Dams and sustaining water harvesting techniques.

Rainwater harvesting is indeed a very good way to save water. In wet climatic countries like the UK where it rains almost daily, rainwater harvesting has tremendous potential. While Rainwater Harvesting Systems (RHS) have traditionally been used to water the garden, new technology RHS can now be plumbed into our home's existing pipework and the rainwater can be used to flush toilets, wash clothes and much more. This can reduce our water consumption by as much as 40% (and lower our water bills), according to the Rainwater Harvesting Association.
Thanks for a well shared report.

very nice. rain water harvest can be helpful more especially during the current situation of drought in most parts of the world. people can also use this water for irrigation agriculture
