Pollution in Lomé

by | 27-07-2017 02:42 recommendations 0

Good evening to all, this month the connection in my country is not good enough that is why I could not publish my reports. The population of Togo has relatively strong growth and recent but rapid urbanization. Despite the low greenhouse gas emission rate of 0.02%, the maritime region and more precisely the capital Lome is so polluted. The beach has become a place where some people who do not have a latrine in their houses do their needs, others create wild dumps within a few yards of the waves. The Togolese state, for its part, pollutes the sea with the waste of phosphate thus transforming the color of the sea into yellow. It is written in the Togolese constitution that everyone has the right to live in a healthy environment but it can not be said that the inhabitants of the neighborhoods close to the free zone benefit from this right given the air pollution by the factories. The Togolese town hall does not play major roles in waste management. Given the low purchasing power of the population, rare are those who have subscribed to pre-collection of household waste and the rest of the population throws away any waste its waste (creates a wild dump on open ground Empty, throw waste into gutters or bury them) and some pre-collection companies instead of going to dump waste in intermediate dumps, they prefer to help a certain category of person to use his waste to repack the deventure of their House. Pre-collection agents are exposed to diseases because they do not wear a mask, gloves or boot. If the state can encourage companies that collect and upgrade household waste in certain districts or put in place a good waste collection and recovery policy, I would like to congratulate him. Thank you

Tevi, thank you for you report. It is interesting that Togo's greenhouse gas emission is low, but the area is quite polluted. It seems like the government has not yet begun to deal with the issue seriously. If you see any changes with the government or companies, please tell us later.

Hi Tevi, thanks for sharing your report on pollution in your country.
I'm sorry to hear what's actually happening in your city. It seems appropriate waste management is a top priority of country. Waste management is closely related to sanitization issue in the city and healthy living condition of its citizen. Hope we could see any improvements in near future.

It's really heartbreaking to know that there is so much pollution and waste management issues in Togo. The government should start taking action and enforce laws against contamination to any part of the country before it gets too late. Thank you for sharing:)

It's sad to know that the government who should be enforcing laws against pollution are also polluting the sea. I think environmental activists in Togo need to raise awareness against such practices.

It's really sad to note time and again about increasing pollution, waste management issues, depleting forests and wild life in African cities. Open defecation is a serious issue and must be tackled on top priority by spreading awareness about it's harmful consequences to environment as well as human health. Public toilets must be built. Laws must be made to punish those who are found polluting water or openly defecating. Municipalities must become active to tackle these issues and improve the environment. All the stakeholders from residents to companies to governments have to make efforts in this direction with strong will power and vision to have clean and green environment. Thanks for sharing the concern.

I have come to notice that most African countries do not have waste management programs, and if the do, the programs are ineffective. It is a serious issue a day one that we must a dress immediately.

Thank you Tevi, for bringing up the critical issue of pollution and waste management. As much as we all have a right to a healthy environment, we should also consider it a duty to contribute to the same to earn that right. The issue of open defecation that you have pointed out is serious and a problem in third world countries. India too faces that problem and the government is working steadily it on agenda to provide clean toilet facility for all. Other issues of dumping personal and industrial wastes in water bodies must be curbed through provision of proper waste collection and management services by the government awareness drives and strict enforcement of laws, with punishment for violators.
