The trends of Wood Energy in Madagascar

by | 07-08-2017 17:57 recommendations 0

In Madagascar, the energy consumption accounts 25% of household expenses. And 80% of the energies used are wood-energies. Recently, the total annual wood consumption amounts to 18.3millions m3. Among these woods, 56% are directly used as firewood and 44% are converted into charcoal. However, the harvestable woods in natural forests amount to 8.12 million m3 per year and 1.05 million m3 per year are from 150 000ha of reforestation for energy purposes. It is thus found that there is overexploitation in wood-energy in Madagascar. In view of this situation, what measures have been taken?

First of all, the woods exploited are from three kinds of sources. Such as, the pleasant plantation of Eucalyptus spread in 140 000Ha in the Central Highlands the natural forests more exploited at Mahajanga (in the West), Taolagnaro (East Southern), Antsiranana (Nourth), Toliara (West Southern) and industrial plantations extended Moramanga, Alaotra Mangoro Region by FANALAMANGA society.

Then, the State?s New Policy of Energy (NPE) is aiming to reduce the overexploitation of wood-energies in Madagascar by implementing reforestation programs, supporting a sustainable management of the wood-energy sector by combining better regulation of the marketing and promotion circuits of alternative energy to wood-energy. In this context, the product ?Saribao Turbo? was born. It is substitute energy of charcoal composed of fine coal, organic waste and binders. This organic coal therefore helps to reduce the use of wood for the production of coals.

Finally, the NPE promote that 70% of household should use economic stoves by 2030, but currently, only 8% used that. Using this kind of stove will reduce the timber harvesting to 50%. Many projects and manufacturers promote the economic stoves. Among that there are stoves from ADES. It reduces the wood ?consumption to 50% and its lifespan is 3 to 5 years.

Those are some solutions adopted in Madagascar to reduce the timber harvesting and to allow the population to use sustainable wood-energy. But the wood-energy is cheaper than others that are why, the forests are overexploited.

    You're welcome Cheonghan and Daon
Cheonghan: the national policy of energy promote the use of renewable energy to reduce the over exploitation of forest
Daon: that's true. people should replant tree to compensate the destruction at least. There is research to find alternative like bio alcohol but it's not yet shared

Hi Razanamanana! Thanks for sharing your report on wood energy in your country.
It's true that cheaper cost is important factor in choosing among energy sources, and I think that's why people still depend on cheaper but dangerous energy such as nuclear. In a long term, however, we need to find alternative or at least way to use it more effciently.

Razanamanana, thank you for your report. This was a very interesting report about the situation of wood energy in Madagascar. I see from your report that the forests are being overexploited. Let us see how the government deals with the issue further.

Sumit: in Madagascar, there are projets focused on renewable energy but it's reserved for selected areas because it is in the step of research

Arushi= Thank you. that's true, the exploiting forests is easy and cheaper. We need sensitize also the people to use another alternative to reduce the forest destruction

Aaditya: Thank you. Yeah, Saribao Turbo is an alternative of charcoal. But the problem is the cost. The major of population can't afford this. In the future, I hope also it will reduce the demand of firewood

Cutting of trees for the purpose of fuel wood is very common in rural areas in the developing countries. But it puts a negative effect on forests. So the government and the local NGO's or orrganizations should come forward to mitigate this crisis. Use of charcoal and Biofuel should be introduced in the rural areas.

Thanks for bringing up this issue. I am doing a research on 'Use of Biomass (wood and other organic matter from a tree) for energy or heating'. Even during my research, I have been reading about people over-exploiting forests because wood is cheaper. Many people cut trees to get and sell wood. It is pathetic. As you rightly mentioned, wood use for energy should be sustainable by strategies like Reforestation.

Thanks Razanamanana, for your report. I remember reading about Saribao Turbo in a previous report as well- the new kind of coal obtained from waste and agglomerating coal fines. This can be a good breakthrough by reducing the quantity of actual coal used is reduced. Also as I have read a small amount of this fuel has about double the efficiency as compared to traditional charcoal, and emits mush lesser smoke too. Let us hope that Sarobao Turbo will help reduce the demand of firewood and contribute to replenishing Madagascar's forest reserves.
