When the Girl Guides get involved in the Environment

Youth Exchange South to South (YESS) is an exchange program between Guides in the Africa Region organized by WAGGGS in collaboration with FK Norway. This year, Fanilon'I Madagasikara, Catholic Girl Guides Association, hosted three participants: Grace from Rwanda, Elisabeth from Tanzania and Lucia from Zimbabwe.

Conscious of the importance of the environment, the Guides are committed to fight against climate change and in the preservation of the environment. Thus, under the YESS 2017 program, the Africa Green Tech Generation campaign was undertaken. This involves planting trees and encouraging girls (green girls) to plant 2 trees each.

During the program of this year 2017, YESS participants and Fanilon'I Madagasikara managed to plant 3,000 trees and to recruit 1,500 green girls. During the campaign, environmental awareness of the population through poems, mimes, scenic expressions and advocacy was carried out. Then a collective reforestation was done with the green girls.

This campaign took place in two distinct places: in Sadabe, the development center of Fanilon'I Madagasikara for Rural Guides and the Catholic Guides In Mahajanga, with the massive contribution of the young committee.

Through this experience, we can learn that young people can contribute to the promotion of the environment when they are trusted and empowered. Everyone can save the world and ensure sustainable development by respecting the environment and planting trees. Let us be responsible, let us act together for nature.

Thanks Razanamanana, for sharing this report with us. Scouts and Guides can be enlisted to fight against climate change and for environmental conservation. Planting 3000 trees and recruiting 1,500 volunteers, the campaign looks really impressive. Environmental awareness through creative means is a a very innovative way for climate advocacy.
