Regional Network of Conservationists Educators in Albertine Rift (RNCEAR) 6th Annual Meeting and Social Science Research Methods Workshop

University of Burundi, Faculty of Sciences in Department of Biology has organized the 6th Annual Conference of Regional Network of Conservationists Educators in Albertine Rift (RNCEAR) from 5-10 August 2013 at SYLAB Bujumbura. In the conference there have been talks about conservation within Climate Change and Social Economics, and also a Training Workshop on Social Science Research Methods (SSRM) in collaboration of Antioch University New England, United States of America with National University of Rwanda, Rwanda. Numerous members of the network from Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda have attended the conference and I was one among the training attendees from Rwanda.


1. THE RNCEAR ANNUAL MEETING: Community participation in climate change and protected areas conservation

 

CLIMATE CHANGE


Here they have been talks on the Impact of water loss on the Gorilla habitat by Deo Tuyisingize from Karisoke Research Center, Rwanda and on Potential contribution of urban roadside plant nurseries to plant conservation and human well-being in face of climate change in Uganda by Dr. Edward N. Mwavu.

 

SOCIAL ECONOMICS


They have been talks on Conflict between wildlife and communities bordering lake Mburo National Park: crop damage as the highest predictor by Dr. Grace Kagoro, Uganda on Human- Wildlife interaction in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Districts of Tanzania: A case study on small mammals by Dr. Flora Magige and also on Changes in crop raiding by primates and conservation implications: the case of Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) at Volcanoes National Park by Albert Musana.

 

OTHERS TALKS

Talks on Using the cultural values approach to enhance conservation: the case of Batwa in South West Uganda by Fredrick Ssali, on Sustainable management of non timber forest products in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo: case of wild yams in the hinterland of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park by Dr. Christia A. Amani, and also on Determining strategic position for training institutions: the case of CAWN by Freddy Manongi.

 

1. SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH METHODS TRAINING WORKSHOP


The workshop has been facilitated by Kayla A. Cranston from Antioch University New England, United States of America and Dr. Simeon Wiehler from National University of Rwanda, Rwanda. And after we had a field visit in Rusizi Natural Reserve.


This is one way about what is going on about Wildlife conservation in Albertine Rift.
