The use of pesticides

by | 01-10-2017 10:05 recommendations 0

Pesticides are chemical substances that are widely used on plants and crops to prevent insects and animals from destroying them. Pesticides were introduced during the industrial age, and they improved the agriculture industry. However, they also have had negative impact on our health and environment.  Here are some negatives and positives of pesticides use.

The use of pesticides benefits humans because it leads to more harvest. Pesticides help to keep destructive pests away from crops, leading total higher yields and better quality of products. Pesticides are easily accessible. All types of pesticides can be found in stores around the world for affordable prizes. This makes it easy for people to use them to protect their crops. The use of pesticides also leads to low food prizes. Farmers usually include the cost of their loses in the prices of the food they sell on the market. Therefore, since pesticides reduces reduces the losses of farmers, consumers benefit from low food prices.

On the other hand, pesticides have negative impacts on humans. There are usually concerns raised about the health and safety of pesticides use. Pesticides are chemicals, therefore, they are not safe for human ingestion. Yet, they are used on the food that we eat. Another danger posed by pesticides is that they kill other living things that they were not meant to kill. Pesticides are also dangerous to children when they are used in areas where children play. Children breathe at a faster rate than adults, therefore leading them to inhale more chemicals which is harmful for their health. Pesticides are also poisonous, and access to poison is not always good. They not only kill insects, they also harm other warm blooded animals like dogs and humans.

Because of the many benefits of pesticide use, it may be expedient to accept a reasonable degree of risk in using them. Special attention is now being paid to the education and training of workers as a means to ensure a safe use of pesticides.

It's true that chemical pesticides did contribute to industrial development and mass production of agriculture products to cover increasing demands from growing population. But at that time, people didn't concern about its side effects (maybe they didn't sufficiently notice them).
Leading to that point of view, we must consider 'environmentally friendly' whichever technology or product will be made of it. For our sustainable development and future environments. Thanks for your report!!

Hi, Lemuel! Thank you for your report on pesticides. Indeed, one of the most serious problems that chemical pesticides have is that they usually affect other forms of life as well (not only the pests). One solution, as you have mentioned, is to educate farmers on safe pesticide use. This will stop them from using excessive amounts of pesticides, and make sure that they are using protective gear when handling pesticides (such as protective clothing, masks and gloves). Another solution may be to use alternative methods that can specifically target the pests. For example, there are methods that use the natural predators of the pests, which can eliminate the pests without spraying poisonous chemicals.
