Sanitation problem in Port Bouet |
---|
We are facing in the City of Abidjan one of the greatest challenges the environment could face anywhere. Here, we are unable to control waste. The city Abidjan possesses ten communes and one of its communes called Port-Bouet is dealing with uncontrollable waste. This situation is growing from time to time and today it is becoming almost impossible to now find ways and means to solve the problem of waste in that commune. The commune of Port-Bouet is where you can find the main airport of the country, that is to say it is the border between the country and the rest of the world. It is also where you can find the ocean and a big side of the lagoon, so the beach for excursions and distraction. This shows the touristic potential of that commune. But this commune has a great problem which is the waste. You find dumps everywhere and they are not cleaned out. Consequently, this situation brings several consequences. The proliferation of waste is very dangerous for the land itself. In addition to that, it pollutes the air by releasing Green House Gas and this affects directly the atmosphere, therefore we assist to a change in the atmosphere and this impacts negatively the climate. Undoubtedly, this leads to climate change which is the greatest environmental and the world challenge today as it threatens the sustainability of the earth and the people living on it. Also, this untreated waste have negative impact on the health of the population as the sent released in the air is breathed by the population, and children and old people are the most touched. This phenomenon of waste also threatens the touristic potential of the commune and sells a very bad image of the country as it is the first area people meet when they arrive in the country. Concerning the touristic potential the beach will no longer be attended by many people, it can lead to the loss of jobs and then increase the unemployment rate of youth as they are the majority of those who work at the beach. We can sum up that, beyond its impact on the environmental and social level, waste in this commune also has an impact on the economy. What can we then do? Solutions can be found and set at three levels. The first level concerns the authorities of the commune who have to take action to give a beautiful image and maintain the economic revenue of the commune by also keeping the people safe. The second level deals with environmental NGOs an youth led as sociations which can undertake sensitization actions to reduce waste in homes, in schools and work places. The third level concerns environmental activists and leaders like the Eco Generation ambassador who can undertake education actions within schools and organize clean up actions every month with students from different schools. |

Hi, Frederic! I agree with three main solutions you've suggested. In cases of Abidjan city, recent states of its port Bouet really seems critical to overall citizens especially living near the seaside. And it's sure that they really need a great chance to reverse their situation. In my country, South Korea has been sick of ocean pollution due to the ship accident which caused a great damage to people's base of life. It's not due to waste coming from people but in the way that people gathered together and did succeed to reconstitute ocean to be clean, I believe Abidjan also could overcome excessive pollution problems from their cooperation including both government and citizens. I sincerely hope Abidjan to figure out it. Best wishes for this city and thanks for your sharing, Nice work Frederic :)

Hi, Frederic! Thank you for your report on the current sanitation problem in Port Bouet. This problem seems like a universal one, since a lot of tourist attractions all over the world are facing the same problem. The solutions that I've thought of is really similar to the ones that you have proposed. I think the solution would be to (a) set stronger regulations to restrict littering, (b) spread awareness of the problem through educational events and public messages, and (c) for people to take action by participation in cleanups. I hope that Port Bouet, and all the other cities around the world that are facing this problem, can be cleaned up soon!
