Forest Cover in Danger |

In the last two years, the country has lost about 2% of its remaining forest cover dropping from 11% to 9% according to a joint Water and Environment Sector Review Report. The drop in the green cover has been consistent with a reported 24% of total area in 1990 and 9% in 2017. If the trend is to continue, this simply means that there will be no more forests ten years to come and therefore the government and it's citizens must do something to save the country. Some of the major causes of the deforestation include;- -Population increase which results in demand for more land for settlement and wood for construction (roofing and scaffolds); -Fuel: Wood fuel is widely used in many homes and institutions such as schools and prisons. Other alternatives such as gas and electricity exist though they are quite expensive so people opt for the cheaper option. There are however new cooking stoves on the market such as the ''biolite stove'' which are ecofriendly (release less smoke, can work with dry and decomposed domestic wastes) and can also convert the heat energy into electric energy which can be used to charge some small electric devices such as phones and electric torches. In his speech, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Water and Environment said that the government had prioritized the restoration of forests from the current total land area to 24% by 2040, this through planting about 200 million trees in all national forests and forest reserves in the country. Tax cuts on alternative sources of fuel should also be implemented to promote fuel diversity as a result reducing on over dependence on wood fuel. Other options such as the use of drone technology to disperse tree seeds and monitoring the existing plant cover against illegal deforestation can be used. Great report Isaac! Cutting trees is a major problem and has been one for a long time. Also at the rate that it is continuing, it doesn't look like it will stop any time soon. However it is heartening to know that the government is working towards afforestation as you mentioned. The alternate methods of conserving our forests that you wrote are also some to be noted and applied. Technology can be used for the betterment of our planet!

Hi Issac, its very alarming that the forest cover has decreased in Uganda. To increase the forest cover, local people or forest depending people should work with the government by participatory forestry.

It was very interesting. Thanks!

Hi, Isaac! Thank you for your report on deforestation. Indeed, deforestation has been a main environmental problem since decades ago, and it still is today. We've certainly reached a point where the Earth simply may not be able to afford to lose more trees. Introducing more advanced technologies in construction to build taller buildings may make it possible for more houses to be built upwards and not sideways, which means that forest land can be spared from deforestation. Of course, this probably won't be a permanent solution, and the more fundamental problem is overpopulation (which is another serious global problem). Until the problem of overpopulation is solved, we must do our best to preserve what forests we have in the process of building new homes. Nice work on your report!
