Dubai Municipality's Public Parks and Horticulture Department in U.A.E has initiated a new and eco-friendly method of getting rid of mosquitoes from houses, farms and public places.
The method is really easy to implement and can be made with common household stuff which we use in our daily life. By using this simple trap, there is no need of using pesticides and mosquito sprays which would be harmful for us as well as the environment.
The device can be made with an ordinary PET bottle which re-purposed to form a funnel trap into which mosquito baits are places to attract them. The bottle is then wrapped with a black plastic bag or cloth to provides a dark and comfortable environment for mosquitos to breed. That is when the mosquitoes fall for the trap
In order to attract mosquitos to find the location of this trap, yeast and sugar is put into the trap. The mixture releases carbon dioxide safely using the interaction of sugar and yeast, which attracts mosquitos and some other insects.
Mr Nabeel bin Haider, Head of Horticulture Services Section, Eng. Munir Hasan Ghaith, Senior Horticulture Specialist and Eng. Nasim Abdul Malik Al Naqib, Chemical Analyst were honoured for devising this method.
If implemented at homes and other places, this new method will decrease the amount of harmful pesticides being spayed into the environment. I hope all the eco-warriors will take note of this initiative and try practising this method at homes and public places
