Wildlife is important for our survival

Sustaining wildlife is important for the sustenance of mankind.  As world is fast changing due to several developments including technology and culture, it is important to channel these changes and complement the wildlife conservation efforts that is key for our future.  For example, be it fast disappearing rainforest of the Amazon basin or the plains of Serengeti, we are losing with it an important ingredient which is critical for the survival of our eco system.  Without our ecosystem there is no survival for humans on Earth.

For example, still the elements contributing to wildlife trades are not clearly identified.  Efforts to stop wildlife trades are not effective due to black markets or illegal trades across borders.  There is little that can be accomplished by local enforcement bodies or governments in terms of curbing the illegal sale of animal products.  For example, in the 1970s and 80s, elephants were poached for their tusks and this was followed by a ban on sale of elephant tusks.  Now it is the sale of elephant skin for which these poor animals are hunted.  It is very unfortunate that humans succumb easily to the woos by illegal trade organizations that illegally subscribe to animal products for money.

It is this insatiable desire of humans that has resulted in damaging our ecosystem on a consistent basis since the 1950s.   We have since then witnessed the disappearance of several species including the single horn Rhinos and the Pandas.  If the trend continues, we may see a 50% reduction in animal and plant species and a corresponding increase in diseases at a global level.  The relationship between the damage to our ecosystem and its influence on humans is rarely acknowledged.  And organizations are often misled to believe there is no correlation between damage to ecosystem and increase in diseases, for example.

While it is important to stop these illegal trades of animal products, this would require more than just commitment and enforcement from local governments.  While it is important to involve local bodies in curbing trade of wildlife products, it is equally important for neutral organizations such as United Nations to step in and form a law enforcement force that will patrol forest regions across the world.  In addition, the technological advances could monitor forests through flying drones and reported to the neutral law enforcement bodies for further action.  More stringent laws should be introduced such as trade embargo for those nations that practice illegal wildlife trades.

Finally, it is important to realize the power of common citizens and without their commitment no solution may seem sufficient to conserve our wildlife.  Effort from every citizen counts and we need to get our acts together and save plant Earth from extinction.
