Alternative energy in Nepal

by Prayash Pathak (Chalise) | 24-12-2017 20:35 recommendations 0

Nepal is a country blessed with high potential of alternative renewable energy resources. The possibilities of producing electricity from flowing water, blowing winds or sunlight is limitless. Nepal has abundant hydroelectricity potential. And no one denies the fact that hydroelectricity is a major source of our energy. Being the second richest country in water resources, the theoretical potential of hydroelectricity production in Nepal is 83, 000 MW of which 42,000 MW is economically and technically feasible in our context. But another surprising fact is that even with such rich resources the Nepalese are still facing the problem of power cut due to insufficient hydroelectricity production. Present production of hydroelectricity is only about 1000 MW inspite of the huge production potential.
Other alternative energy abundantly available in the country is solar energy, biomass and wind. The country is located at a favorable latitude receiving the warmth of sun almost all the year. A recent study has shown that the utilization of only 0.01%  of Nepalese land is capable of producing about 3000 GWh of solar energy per year. But still the country is not being able to utilize this golden energy source as per its capacity. Few government established solar panels have been laid in some places.
Wind energy is also generated in the hilly areas of Nepal. But this is limited to few hilly districts like Manang and Mustang. The use of bio-gas is very famous in the village areas. The total production of animal dung is about 15 million ton that is used either to produce bio-gas or burnt directly through improved cook-stoves. Around 900 thousand household have completely adopted such clean energy solutions.
So to sum up even though improvements are to be done in sector of hydro electricity and solar energy but still the country has shown 10% increase in use of alternative energy since 2009. Bio-fuels have been highly encouraged by the government. Electric vehicles are being popular among the peoples. So let?s hope that in the near future,  Nepal will be able to fully utilize its alternative energy and get rid of the fossil fuels.
