Alternative Methods of Producing Energy

by Asmita Pramanik | 28-12-2017 05:07 recommendations 0

Energy is a treasure in today¡¯s world that is driven by industrial growth. The value of our energy resources has increased undoubtedly due to the uncalled-for decline of these resources. To give you a glimpse of what we are facing today, here are some shocking statistics that will aid in opening our eyes to the crisis we are facing today.

¡¤         The U.S. economy wastes 61 to 86 percent of the energy that flows through it
Lawrence Livermore National found in its 2012 annual report on national energy waste that the U.S. economy is 39 percent efficient, less efficient than ever before. The study factors in energy wasted in everything fromelectricity plants and cars to home appliances and furnaces. The U.S. gets a failing grade for efficiency.

¡¤         Americans spend $130 billion a year on wasted energy
A 2009 McKinsey & Company study found that American homes and businesses collectively pay for $130 billion worth of energy that powers standby appliances and heat that warms the air on the other side of the cracks in their walls.

¡¤         The amount of energy wasted by 75,000 average American homes in a single year is equal to the waste that occurred in the 2010 BP Oil Spill
According to a study from Energy Savvy, it would cost $1 billion to retrofit all the homes in a small city and save the same amount of energy that would have been generated with the roughly 50 million gallons of oil that leaked into the Gulf of Mexico.

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

-SOLAR PANELS

Living in a country like UAE, solar panels seem like the best option. Solar panels typically go on your roof, although you can also install them in your yard.A typical house consumes at least a kilowatt of power, so a few square feet of solar panels should be enough to power most or all of your needs.

If your current roof is nearing the end of its lifespan, you could also consider investing in solar shingles. Where standard rooftop solar panels are mounted on top of your current roof, solar shingles actually take the place of your roof tiles.

-WIND TURBINES

Wind power is more stable than solar, and a good-sized wind turbine can easily generate most of our electricity needs. Depending on your area, wind might be a better renewable investment than solar.

-Tesla Powerwall

The Powerwall is a large rechargeable battery that can store several kilowatt-hours of electricity. On its own, it can be programmed to charge itself from the grid when electricity prices are low, and discharge when prices are high, to save you money during peak hours. However, the Powerwall is best used in combination with a source of renewable energy generation like solar or wind power. The Powerwall can store excess electricity that you don't use right away, so you can always use renewable solar or wind energy even when the sun is down or the wind's not blowing.

-SOLAR AIR CONDITIONING

It might seem strange to use heat from the sun to cool your home, but that's exactly what solar air conditioning does. Solar air conditioning uses the same principles of the solar water heater.

Air conditioning uses more electricity than almost anything else in your home. Air conditioning can cost you a substantial amount of money every year, especially if you have central air and you live in a hot climate. Using hot water to cool your home can save you money and help the environment.

According to a research based in Stanford, the world can run solely on alternative energy within 20-40 years with the help of today¡¯s technology. The world we envision can be created as long as we carry the will to achieve it.

Hi, Asmita! Thanks for informing us on the current energy wastage of the U.S., and methods of alternative energy that may be used to solve the problem. I must say, though, I would have liked to learn about the situation in UAE too, since you are a local ambassador :) Apart from that, I liked how you introduced the Tesla Powerwall to us, because it is a great example of how current advancements in technology can help us in saving energy and using it efficiently. Nice work!
