HYDRO POWER PLANT / HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY in the PHILIPPINES

by CARLOS JR. DEGAMO | 03-01-2018 23:46 recommendations 1

The Philippine government has legislated a number of policies in order to increase the use of renewable energy by the country. The types available include hydropower/hydroelectric, geothermal power, wind power, solar power and biomass power and each renewable energy source has pros and cons.

But for now, let me discuss about Hydropower Plant wherein this is the source of our electricity in our province and also here where I stay right now and the rest of the northern part of the philippines. According to earth eclipse they say Hydroelectric energy is a renewable form of energy produced by the moving water. It comes from the Greek word? hydro? which means water. Hydroelectric energy is operated by requiring a large artificial reservoir of water called the dam. The dam is built with tunnels where water can pass through. The flowing of water creates the energy to turn the turbines which turn the generators, converting energy into electrical energy.

 Hydroelectric Energy Pros:

1.      It is a clean energy source.

2.      No Fuel Cost

3.      It is renewable.

4.      Low Operating Costs and little Maintenance

5.      Low Electricity Cost

6.      No Greenhouse Gas Emissions/Air Pollution

7.      Energy Storage

8.      Small Size Possible

9.      Reliability

10.  High Load Factor

11.  Long Life

12.  . It is stable and reliable.

13.  It is safer than other energy sources.

14.   It offers opportunities for recreation and tourism.

Hydroelectric Energy Cons:

1.       Environmental, Dislocation and Tribal Rights.

2.       Wildlife and Fishes get Affected

3.       Earthquake Vulnerability

4.      Siltation

5.       Tail Risk,Dam Failure

6.      Cannot be Built Anywhere

7.       Long Gestation Time

8.       It is expensive to build.

9.       It can cause environmental damage.

10.   It can lead to drought.

11.   It can cause insufficient supply of water.

12.   It can cause floods to low-lying regions.

Hi, Carlos! Thank you for introducing hydroelectric energy and its pros and cons. One of the more serious drawbacks of hydroelectric energy is its impact on ecosystems. Usually, when hydroelectric energy is used in rivers, it requires a dam to be built. This cuts off water flow, leading to movement of aquatic lifeforms to be cut off as well. This is what can lead to destruction of ecosystems. Ensuring that at least the minimal required water flow to be sustained may be a way to use hydroelectric generation without destroying the ecosystem.
