A Renewable Energy Powered Adventure to Antartica

by George Zacharia | 04-01-2018 02:04 recommendations 0

Antartica..
The continent of ice..
Explorers love to go there to see and win against the cold and icy weather and be victorious in their expeditions..

Robert Swan, was the first explorer to walk unaided to both poles, in 1980.
And Now, He is doing something amazing.

He and his 23 year old son Barney are doing a 600 mile expedition to Antartica. Well that might seem ordinary?

Well, not at all! This expedition is totally on Renewable Energy!!!
Why? Because Robert Swan feels there is no easy way about Climate Change. Action is inevitable now.

"For the first time in history we will be surviving only on renewable energy. It's never been done," 61-year-old polar veteran Swan, the first person to walk to both the North and South poles, told Reuters.

The Swans' 5,000 daily calorie intake will come from sustainable and energy-giving foods, such as grains and almond bars, to help them overcome temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius and the obvious risks of frostbite, altitude sickness and snow blindness.

Perpetual sunlight will charge the solar panels, which will power a NASA-designed ice melter to provide them with enough water for drinking and cooking.

"Water is gold down in Antarctica, without it you're going to be dying pretty quickly, as dad always reminds me," said Barney Swan.

While their aim is to complete the trek using just solar energy, under extreme weather conditions they'll turn to an advanced biofuel made out of wood chip waste.

The father and son team is being supported by the likes of NASAwhich is providing state of the art solar-powered ice melters, advanced biofuels provided by Shell and technical clothing for extreme conditions by Patagonia.

We need to applaud them for the decision for this 600 mile, 60 day trek, with an initiative never attempted before. Truly believe this will set an example for others.

Hi, George! The renewable energy trek was very interesting to read about! Not only was a excited about the trek itself, I was also excited about the technology had been provided by NASA. Since NASA is known for being a lead institute for developing various forms of new and efficient technologies, the trek may contribute to further technological research. I hope that someday technology for renewable energy (especially solar energy) will become advanced enough to allow generation of sufficient amounts of energy from very small and lightweight portable devices. People could wear the devices easily and comfortably, and this could be more convenient that carrying around or looking for fossil fuels or other conventional fuels (such as wood).
