The Big Belly

by | 02-09-2013 16:28 recommendations 0

I came across an invention from the Big Belly company the Big Belly Solar powered Trash Compactor. it has been around for sometime in the US however, in Kenya its a new gadget! It had been bought in an initiative to reduce littering.

However the Big Belly Solar Compactor is no ordinary one! It harvests energy from the sun and uses it to compact the trash so that it can take less space! What's the use of this? After some time you see even the litter cans being filled up. In a big city, it becomes tedious to constantly empty the bins every few hours! With the big belly compactor, the compactor stacks the rubbish after melting it into very small cubes using high pressure so that the compactor can hold 5 times as much rubbish as an ordinary litter bin.

In America, the city of Philadelphia has heavily invested into it. They have replaced 700 traditional garbage cans, with 500 of the Big Belly Solar compactors. Reducing trash pick ups from 17 times a week to 5 times a week. Over the next 10 years they plan to save $13 million dollars. The units can even be wrapped in custom decals, giving your public area a little personalization.

I feel that we should have this in every public place and in countries with high population and low energy costs. It's self sustainable and requires very littles maintenance. It has even been improved as it has a computer which shows the amount of trash in the bin and the space left available. I think that this is even more hygienic instead of the traditional 'opening a bin' to find out the trash level.

The good thing is that the big belly is approved of almost all government and NGO schemes as a result they are supporting it and buying it. Many universities such as George Town has placed in on campus and it has been introduced in Kenyan Airports.
