New Ramsar sites in Romania and Bulgaria |
---|
Danube that great river that makes a marvelous line between two countries, is not just a border, is a ecosystem with unlimited ways for living. All started at the end of 2012 when WWF Romania lauched a project for studying the area near Danube: Istret, Suhaia, Calarasii, Srebarna, Ibisha and Belene Islands . This research study was part f the LIFE + Green Borders project, funded by UE, with the main purpose of designation of transboundary measures helping the conservation process of rare bird species and the designation of transboundary reserves along the Lower Danube Good eco-news was listed: three Ramsar sites were officially designated in Romania and Bulgaria. Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Conservation officially approved three new wetlands proposed by WWF located along the Danube border .The three sites are: Calarasi Lake-Srebarna (Lacul Calarasi- Srebarna With the main purpose of the conservation of the bird colonies, Bulgaria and Romania would have to colaborate for the protection of these wetlands ans also for the coordinated cooperation to better protect wetlands and migratory species that are feeding, wintering, nesting and breeding, on the both sides of the Danube. For example, the studies made by WWF in the last three years had showed up that the herons that nest in colonies on the Bulgarian island Ibisha, are feeding on Lake Bistreţ from Romania. And also the small cormorants and pelicans that are nesting near Lake Srebarna Bulgarian, are feeding from Romanian Lake Calarasi. In April, the environment ministers of Romania and Bulgaria formally approved the proposal WWF to create the three wetlands. Currently, there are 16 Ramsar sites border, 15 of them being in Europe and one in Africa. What is Ramsar? Convention on the Conservation of Wetlands was signed on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. This is the first international agreement for the protection and sustainable use of natural resources. The mission of the Ramsar Convention is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local, regional, national and international cooperation, as a contribution to sustainable development. What is WWF? Established in 1961, WWF is one of the most important international organizations carrying out nature conservation projects in over 100 countries. WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of the environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. http://ramsar.wetlands.org/ |
