Pesticides

by Lohita Swaminathan | 07-02-2018 03:29 recommendations 0

Pesticides and fertilizers are always needed to grow crops and vegetables. They are needed to safeguard human health and safety but they also have negative effects.

Pesticide Problems

Research has shown that pesticides have serious negative influence creating reproductive abnormalities. Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment has stated that children exposed to pesticides have increased rates of leukemia and brain cancer; similarly pregnant women with exposure have higher miscarriage rates; pesticides also damage the lungs and nervous system. As regards influence on environment, pesticides pollute the air, water and ground causing plant and animal sickness or death and physical deformities. Pesticides can damage natural bodies of water.

Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95% of herbicides reach a destination other than the targeted pest, since they are sprayed over large areas. Water runoff carry pesticides into aquatic environments; wind disperses them into nearby fields, cattle grazing areas, nearby homes etc. Over time, repeated application increases pest resistance and newer and stronger pests emerge. Many pesticides have been banned, while regulations have limited and reduced their use.

Pesticides and children

The human brain is not fully formed until the age of 12, and childhood exposure to certain pesticides cause developmental problems of the central nervous system. Children absorb proportionally greater amounts of many substances through their lungs and intestinal tracts, and take in more air, food and water per kilogram of their body weight than adults. Their poor immune systems and detoxifying mechanisms make them vulnerable.

Benefits of Pesticides

Pesticides safeguard crops from pest attacks. Pesticides prevent spreading of diseases. They keep swimming pools free of insects and safeguard buildings from termite attacks and rodents. Pesticides are very useful in preventing attacks on crops like corn and cotton thus saving prices of food and clothing.

It is important to educate the farmers on the right amounts of pesticides to use in their farms. If used in the permitted quantities, their effects are not harmful provided precautions are taken prior to consumption. However, at times, there is a feeling among the farming community that 'more the better', where more quantities of pesticides would result in better yields resulting in food poisoning. I have observed this in Strawberry farms where the excess quantities cause the fruit to spoil or develop spots that eventually spoil the fruit. Hence limiting to right quantities of pesticides is critical and should be a part of education lessons for farmers and public.

Use of pesticide can be completly replaced by using natural predators or organic pesticide.

Pesticides is actually used to protect the crops or agricultural stuff from pest and other harmful insects. But some time the concentration of harmful chemical in it is so high that it affects the human health as well. So the question arises what should we do in such a situation to fight it . We jut have to figure out some mid path to fight such problem. We have to avoid use of highly toxic and concentrated pesticides to avoid its impact on human health.

As we know that use of pesticides carry lot of health issues but are implicitly forced to use it otherwise we will fail to meet agricultural demand to satisfy a huge population. But we can use that pesticides having less impact on human health.

Hi, Lohita! I like how you explained that pesticides aren't entirely harmful - they do actually protect us from many harmful bugs and parasites. But, as you've said, too much exposure to certain types of pesticides can lead to harm caused by the pesticides themselves. I think the most important thing is to regulate the amount and concentration of the pesticides used, to wash off pesticides from food products before eating, and to use protective gear when using pesticides. The balance between harm from pests and harm from pesticides needs to be maintained. Of course, a better solution will be to use a pest control method that is not harmful to us, such as using natural materials or using predators of the pest that can keep the pest population under control without harming humans. Thanks for your report, Lohita!
