SociSo media is transforming traditional media and influencing how we share news and information. Recent data shows that 300 million people spend more than 5 hours each day on social networks. About 200,000 videos are uploaded to YouTube everyday. There is no doubt that social media has become a huge part of the daily lives of people. The question is, can it be an effective tool to spread awareness on the environment? Well, this was the topic of our discussion last workshop. Some of the question we answered was: -Why does current social media focus merely on the negative impacts of environmental problems rather than on ways to deal with it? -What role should the social media play in the future? -To what degree can the social media ultimately influence public opinion and motivate more people to get involved in responding to environmental problems? I welcome anyone who wants to contribute his/her views here so that we may synthesize and discuss them.

Hi, Razaan! Thanks for telling us about the discussion about social media and the environment! In my personal opinion, I think that social media focuses strongly on the negative impacts of environmental problems because of the attention that they get. Shocking stories and photos of environmental destruction catch the eye of viewers and get a lot of attention on social media platforms. I agree that the ways to deal with these problems do not get nearly as much attention. I think that environmental news on social media should be used to first catch the viewer's attention and then lead to explanations about how we can solve the problem. After becoming startled by alarming news, people will naturally be more interested about finding out how to help. Social media has a very strong influence on modern generations, and I hope that it can be employed in saving our environment!
