Water Capture from the Rooftop(Rain) |
---|
Having read about the global water crisis, many countries most especially in the developing world suffering due to the lack of access to usable water, I thought that there was really a need to look up new methods or revive some old ways of preserving water that had been dropped. According to water.org, 1 in 9 people lack access to safe water today and 1 million people are killed by water, sanitation and hygiene-related disease each year. Much as there is a reliable supply of water in my country, I would really like to talk about some interesting water preservation system I saw during my visit to Tunisia, the capturing of rain water using roof tops, water which is stored in tanks. This is one good way, very ignored by many people that we can capture water(rain water), store it for later use mostly during the dry seasons for irrigation, animals and domestic (home) use of course. The water for home use can be purified using some systems like the life sack and the water purifying bicycle among others. I believe that these purification methods are quite cheap and can also be made affordable even to the areas where there is lack. We should work together as the citizens of the earth, using all economical ways of preserving and providing water in order to survive/ reduce on water scarcity that has also been predicted to occur by the United Nations. Hi, Souhil! Thank you for introducing methods of rainwater harvesting! It will be great if more rainwater harvesting systems could be installed on rooftops, as using saved rainwater can reduce the energy used in water purification and water transportation. The saved rainwater could be used for tasks that do not require highly purified water, such as watering plants or cleaning cars. Nice work!
