Though a forerunner in many IT areas as engineering, it is a disappointment to reveal that environmental engineering is not of a prized, or famous job in Korea. But still, there have been some remarkable achievements, one of them which I want to introduce today, called the wonders of toilets. Toilets, praised as one of the most needed items of the 20th century, was sued (in the literal sense), by a Korean inventor professor Han. Currently teaching the students of how to save rainwater, he is absorbed in inventing a new toilet called ?haewotori?, meaning dissolving worries and enriching the earth. Tori, for short, is an toilet that does not need water, and instead applies the concept of recycling resources. A replica of the kinds of toilet that Korea used hundreds of years ago, it uses the human waste to use as a manure. But what exactly changed? The complex mechanism of Tori allows the human waste to be sorted into dung and urine so that each could be used differently. Professor Han, as well as Tori, has become quite famous due to the professors efforts of accusing the flushing toilets of 10 crimes. For example are, using too much water, wasting human waste, making too much water pollution, causing water shortage and so on. Through this activity, the professor hopes to emphasize that by changing our methods and thoughts, we can make a huge difference. And these thoughts are not that far-fetched. In fact, they are in the wisdoms of our ancestors, of their philosophy of finding harmony with nature. |

That is an excellent concept and to know that it has been used before proves that it has been a successful utility. I do hope that the Professor's in-devour for eliminate the use of water-toilets is eradicated soon enough.

Hi, Jiwon! I think the Haewotori toilet is an invention that can incorporate traditional methods in the modern world in order to solve current environmental issues. Just as people did in the past, we can use human waste as resources such as manure, instead of just dumping it into water. With this system, we can also reduce water pollution due to human waste and save the water used for flushing. Thank you for introducing a great example of environmental engineering :)
