Ebooks to save the enviroment

Even from the title, I believe that many readers will already guess what I am about to say. It is not controversial to say that the paperback industry is one of the most tree-consuming industry. In fact, it took up approximately 125 million trees to cover the books in 2008. This is quite a serious matter, since the woods are directly related to our CO2 consumption, and thus, linked to global warming itself. What can we do to save trees, then?

Thanks to the development of modern technology, ebooks are becoming more available, with diverse books in many different languages. Kindle of Amazon is very famous, but there are varieties in every country I am sure. For example, Korea has yes24 ebook. Unfortunately, there are still some complications to consider whether you should purchase an ebook or not. The costs of buying a ebook, not just in the economic sense, but the environmental purchase is also important to consider. A single e-reader?s total carbon footprint is approximately 168kg, and converting into paper book, the figure is near 7.5 kg or so. Though it can vary with the book?s length and type, this equals to an average of 22-23 books per year. So before purchasing an ebook, you must be aware of your reading habits. Do you read often? What kind of books do you prefer? Hardcover, paperback? If, for example, you read less then 20 books an year, purchasing an ebook can be a minus. Also, ebooks are not forever functional. If you break things too often, or tend to go long times without reading, that just depreciates the advantages of an ebook.

I myself being a book lover, and feel that reading books is not just about the content but how you receive it, I personally cannot give up the feelings of touching the books, leafing through its contents, the way I naturally get to sleep without tiring my eyes. So what I want to recommend is a third way, other than purchasing paper books or ebooks, which is the library. Not only does it hold a variety of books that you might pleasantly enjoy just by looking at the covers, it is environmental friendly as well. The friendliness will no doubt be increased when more and more people read a single book. So paper book lovers, do not be disappointed, and maintain your reading habits!

Ebooks can a vital role in protecting the environment by reducing the use of papers. Decreasing the use of papers means less tree destruction which ultimately leads to green cover.

Hi Jiwon, this is Gyeongrin mentor! Thanks for sharing your opinion about E-books. I also have tried using yes 24 e-book and found it quite good. However as you've said, I agree that purchasing e-books should be done after some consideration of your own reading habit. So I am glad that you've come up with the library. If people start to use the library more rather than purchasing books, it could surely reduce the amount of trees needed to make books! Jiwon thanks for this well written report :D

The notion of reading hardcopy books for forever stay, unless an environmentally friendly idea comes to surface. E-books has a big carbon foot print and I dont think it is a viable alternative to hardcover books.

Its a good idea @Jiwan but for the developing countries like Nepal, its very difficult for the readers to follow eBook as we lack behind in modern technologies and internet.
