Integrated Solid Waste Management Project

by Kushal Naharki | 07-03-2018 23:49 recommendations 0

Solid waste management has remained a major problem of Kathmandu, capital city of Nepal. Kathmandu Metropolitan City alone collects 500 tons of waste every day and 70% of the waste is organic although unmanaged disposal of waste can be found at several places of city leading to the pollution of the valley. There was a requirement of proper waste management project to reduce pollution of the valley caused due to wastes.

Office of Investment Board Nepal, Government of Nepal has signed a Project Development Agreement (PDA) with Nepwaste for Kathmandu Valley Integrated Solid Waste Management Project (Package-I) on March 7. This is a project with a project cost of USD60 Million. This project was developed by Nepwaste Pvt. Ltd. (a joint venture between Organic Village Pvt. Ltd. and communication OY).

The Project has planned to establish Transfer Station at Teku and processing unit and sanitary landfill site at Bancharendradanda, Nuwakot with service station at each municipality of the Kathmandu valley. The nature of the project is Public Private Partnership (PPP), Operate, and Transfer (BOT) process. The plant features Material Reclamation Facility, (Smart) Transfer Stations, Sanitary Landfill Site and Incinerators.

This can be a beginning step to maintain clean and green capital of the nation. I believe that such projects should also be initiated at the other urban places of the nation too. Lets make clean and green nation:):):)

I commend the Government for implementing this project with Nepwaste. Waste management is a problem in many developing and even developed countries. It can leave an adverse effect on the environment if waste is not dealt with safely.

Please keep us posted on the development of this project, it is most insightful!
