Rara is one of the biggest and deepest lake of Himalayas in Nepal. It is the famous part of RARA national park which is located in Mugu district and enlisted in Ramsar site(sept. 2007) among 7 wetland of Nepal. It is located at altitude of 2,900 m above sea level. it covers the water surface area of about 10.8 KM square with the maximum depth of 167 m.
Rara lake has its unique feature, in winter temperature goes below freezing point but the summer is so pleasant, beautiful and breath taking. So the best time to visit Rara is after during summer and before winter. Because it is inside the Rara national park it has its own ecosystem and own beauty. It is one of the famous tourist site for Nepal. Rara lake is holding the rare species of flora and fauna. Lake hold three types of endemic fishes i.e two types of Nepalese snowtrout and Rara snow trout. it also has a rare species of endemic frog Rara lake frog. Rara lake also has many birds species like gadwall, common golden eye etc. Rara lake is surrounded by pine and juniper forests. So it is the one of the most famous destination of tourist in western Nepal. As I already mentioned that it is one of the famous tourist site of Nepal I got a chance to visit Rara lake last year. Society around there is agriculture based so overgrazing and deforestation are the most faced problem. Due to lack of proper management defecation and the waste product like plastics of noodles, plastic bottles carried by visitor were seen around. The unmanaged waste is one of the threat to beauty of Rara. The effect of climate change is high on the wetland it can create the extinction of endangered and rare species around here. It is the fresh water body and visitors are increasing day by day so people will start to construct hotels near the lake, which should be limited around 5-7 KM area of Rara otherwise it will create a great threat to for the Lake. Due to the geographical condition and the unstable government Rara's preservation is a concern to vary few NGOs and INGOs. There is no direct accessible track to Rara so it needs a conservation and sustainable development plan to conserve the Rara. It is the duty of Nepalese government, local resident and the tourist to speak and act for the conservation of the beauty of Rara. " Come, visit and get lost in the beauty of RARA"

Hello Lalit!!
Rara lake seems to be a habitat for many rare species. And it surely seems to be a very beautiful place. The problem about tourism is that it is mostly in a trade-off relationship with preservation. People should be more careful in visiting the beautiful place. I believe a good and strict regulation could be made so that the place could be well preserved.
Thanks for the well written report!!

Hello Lalit, nice to see your report after I saw gorgeous masterpieces in your art exhibition report :)
I see, beautiful landscapes with the rare species of fauna and flora are truly unique characteristics of Rara wetland, and it is also astonishing to see a wetland in such a high altitude.
Nepal government is putting effort in various fields of conservation for its environment, and it is also glad that personal visit is prohibited in Rara wetland for the same reason, too
Keep up with your reports! Thanks

I think co management can be an effective approach in conserving Rara wetland. Besides, construction of infrastructures are threat to the ecosystem of the area.
