Role of Deegaan-Dhawr Initiative in Environmental Protection in Somaliland, Somalia |

Deegaan dhawr is a local initiative which is active in Hargeisa Somalia. Deegaan Dhawr means "protecting the environment" since its inception; Deegaan Dhawr has been working with international organizations which target to protect the environment in collaboration with local communities where degradation, erosion, and pollution take place. As a result, Deegaan Dhawr envisions to see a nation where environment is safeguarded and nurtured in order to slow down climate change induced effects of drought and drop failure in Somalia. Deegaan Dhawr believes that present degradation in some parts of Somalia in particular Somaliland will cause environmental consequences of cyclic droughts and massive desertification when forests and trees are hugely damaged. In addition, deforestation has profound threat to Somaliland people when a substantial area is cut down for the production of charcoal. In Somaliland, local people use charcoal as domestic energy for cooking, warming and doing other domestic chores. While this increases carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, it contributes into desertification. As a result, Deegaan Dhawr imported industrialized coal from foreign countries including Australia, North America, Europe and Asia. This type of charcoal is very useful in many different ways. Firstly, it has economic benefits because 10Kg of the normal charcoal costs 10USD and lasts a very short period time while Deegaan Dhawr?s charcoal is long-lasting and is cheaper than locally produced charcoal. Secondly, it produces less carbon dioxide than local charcoal as this is very important for the local actions to prevent from the occurrence of global warming in the coming decades. Moreover, Deegaan Dhawr is currently working to spread this industrialized charcoal which can be fuel for thousands of people living in the regions and villages of Somaliland, Somalia. However, the potential challenges they are facing now is that people are not familiar with this type of charcoal and prefer the local one without understanding its usefulness. |

Thanks for sharing the news Mohamed!
Deegaan dhawr and its special charcoal surely seems to be a good alternative for the charcoal that most people are currently using. I also do believe that charcoal is still needed in lots of places since alternative energy isn't developed enough for mass supply.
However still, I think it would be good for us to think about ways for developing plants using eco-friendly resources. Do you have any good ideas? If so, share with us ~~
Thanks for the well written report!!
Great report!!!

Hello Mohamed, thanks for sharing an unique environmental news to us up on the board again :)
I see, a special charcoal definitely has its own usage and multi-lateral purposes.
Maybe concentrated types of advertisement are in need to make impressions for people who are potential consumers.
Please share any good news with it to us later on
I will keep that in mind :)
Thanks!
