Hotel Yak & Yeti marked Earth Day 2018 by organizing an interactive programme with students from Tangal Secondary School at Kathmandu. The students participated in activities such as recycling plastic bottles, planting seeds and trees at the hotel?s premise. The Earth Day this year is being celebrated with theme ?End Plastic Pollution?. Hotel Yak & Yeti is also celebrating its 40th year of operation through participating in various community service activities to bring awareness to important social, cultural and environmental issues. Targeting to be a part of effective solid waste management, the hotel has also joined hands with Blue Waste to Value (BW2V), a company that offers environmentally friendly hotel waste management solutions, reads a press release.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event marked across the world to show support for environmental protection. The aim is to encourage people to do things that will benefit the Earth, such as recycling more, using solar power or plant trees. The event takes place around the world and it is described as the biggest secular holiday on the planet. More than a billion people celebrated the day including environmental campaigners Leonardo di Caprio and Emma Watson.

 

How did Earth Day begin?

Earth Day began after a devastating oil spill more almost 50 years ago prompted a group of peace activists to raise environmental awareness. At a UNESCO conference in San Francisco in 1969, peace activist John McConnell proposed that a day should be set aside to honor the Earth and the environment. He believed that humans had an obligation to protect the earth and share its resources with future generations. The first Earth Day took place the following year in 1970 and marking it were 2,000 colleges and 10,000 schools across the US.

Now it is celebrated in 192 countries across the world by around one billion people.

 

The Earth Day name

According to Nelson, the moniker "Earth Day" was "an obvious and logical name" suggested by a lot of other people in the fall of 1969, including, he writes, both "a friend of mine who had been in the field of public relations" and "a New York advertising executive," Julian Koenig. Koenig, who had been on Nelson's organizing committee in 1969, has said that the idea came to him by the coincidence of his birthday with the day selected, April 22; "Earth Day" rhyming with "birthday," the connection seemed natural. Other names circulated during preparations—Nelson himself continued to call it the National Environment Teach-In, but national coordinator Denis Hayes used the term Earth Day in his communications and press coverage of the event was "practically unanimous" in its use of "Earth Day," so the name stuck. The introduction of the name "Earth Day" was also claimed by John McConnell.

Use reusable bags when you go shopping

Don?t use plastic straws with drinks where possible

Buy boxes instead of bottles – cardboard is easier to recycle than plastic

Use reusable bottles and cups

Pack meals in reusable containers instead of disposable plastic containers and sandwich bags
