World Oceans Day-2018

by Bharat Adhikari | 08-06-2018 13:57 recommendations 0

World Oceans Day takes place every 8 June. It has been celebrated unofficially since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Brundtland Commission, i.e. the World Commission on Environment and Development, provided the inspiration for a global oceans day. The 1987 Brundtland Report noted that the ocean sector lacked a strong voice compared to other sectors. At the first World Oceans Day in 1992, the objectives were to move the oceans from the sidelines to the center of the intergovernmental and NGO discussions and policy and to strengthen the voice of ocean and coastal constituencies world-wide.

The Ocean Project, working in partnership with leading organizations from all sectors, including the World Ocean Network, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and many others in its network of 2,000 organizations, has been promoting World Oceans Day since 2002 and together with World Ocean Network led a three-year global petition movement to secure official UN recognition. World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in late 2008.

World Oceans Day events are celebrated on 8 June, the closest weekend, the week, and the month of June. The day is marked in a variety of ways, including launching new campaigns and initiatives, special events at aquariums and zoos, outdoor explorations, aquatic and beach cleanups, educational and conservation action programs, art contests, film festivals, and sustainable seafood events. Youth have been playing an increasingly important role since 2015, including the development in 2016 of a World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council.

Why celebrate World Oceans Day?

World Oceans Day is an annual observation to honor, help protect, and conserve the world's oceans. The ocean provides us with many resources and services including oxygen, climate regulation, food sources, medicine, and more. World Oceans Day also provides an opportunity to take personal and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources.

Action Theme for 2018:

The conservation action theme for World Oceans Day 2018 will be preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean. The Ocean Project continues to expand the youth-focus of World Oceans Day by further expanding the Youth Advisory Council with the addition of 10 new members. The young minds help to shape and improve World Oceans Day as it grows through the years, providing new perspectives, ideas, and recommendations. Together with the Youth Advisory Council, The Ocean Project and its growing network of partners in 120 countries help rally the world each June and expand ocean conservation year-round.

Plastic pollution is causing tremendous harm to our marine resources. For example:

-80% of all pollution in the ocean comes from people on land.

-8 million tons of plastic per year ends up in the ocean, wreaking havoc on wildlife, fisheries and tourism.

-Plastic pollution costs the lives of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals per year.

-Fish eat plastic, and we eat the fish.

-Plastic causes $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems each year.

Let¡¯s save our oceans. Let¡¯s not use plastics.  😊 😊

    Hello Bharat!
Days that commemorate nature encourages people's interest into getting to know and actually love, protect them. Human have polluted oceans in various ways, tourism, waste water, plastic dumping etc. If we do not start to clean this up we will lose the chance to ever make it up. Let's do our best to conserve our beloved ocean!
    Thanks for the report

Hello Bharat, though we are paying attention to micro-plastic issue and marine waste problems, we barely know or try to commemorate of WOD. As we have emitted and thrown out tons of plastic and various trash into ocean, they kept gathering and made a huge continent-alike island in the middle of Atlantic Ocean. Not only this problem to be, and more you would already know about this issue.
It is sad that we have to keep getting rid of what we have done so far, since many species in sea and ocean get affected and die under pain as years go by.
Keeping ourselves awake in this problem and remembering WOD will lead us to collective action and solution!

    Dear bharat,
We cannot deny the fact that we cant stop the plastic, plastic is our daily life and way of living. We should not throw plastic in ocean and try to recycle them.

    Hi Bharat!

Well rounded knowledge on Oceans and their significance for conservation and protection. Though the admission of the date was done officially in 2008. I believe that it has grown to show its importance.

    Lovely report!
