Seabin Project Aimed at Ending Ocean Pollution.

by Rosa Domingos | 11-06-2018 21:56 recommendations 0

Great Pacific Garbage Patch have you heard of it? It?s a huge pile of garbage that?s located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (Johnson,2018). It is so huge; it?s larger than the great state of Texas! Sadly, there are millions of tons of garbage that have collected into one section of the ocean to create what is in essence an island of trash (Johnson,2018).

So where does all the pollution come from?

If you?re just now hearing about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, you might be pondering, "Where did all of the garbage and trash come from?" Well it has come from all over:

    •    People intentionally polluting the ocean and dumping their garbage, including Asian municipal programs and recreational boats (Johnson,2018).
      •  Lost fish-nets and fishing lines, which constitutes more than half the garbage patch
•Trash pulled out by the currents into the ocean that could have been blown from kilometres inland (Johnson,2018).

It?s a gloomy thought that people intentionally pollute the earth without a second thought — as if the planet were put here to be their personal garbage can. While many people do trash the earth intentionally, a lot of the trash in the oceans got there unintentionally. People spend a day at the beach or out on the marina and a piece of trash blows away before they can grab it (Johnson,2018).

It is our new life predicament. No one is the perfect steward of the earth, even if we try to be (Johnson,2018).

The trash is there. The damage is done (Johnson,2018). Even if we put measures into place right now to stop any additional trash from entering the ocean, we?re already in a pretty big pickle (Johnson,2018).

So, let
?s talk about what we can do right now to get the trash out of the water:

• Formulate a clean-up whereby people gather each piece of trash by hand, much like land-based clean-up squads.
• Or, we can look to people who are already taking steps to get and keep the trash out of the water, like the owners of Seabin, and follow their lead (Johnson,2018).

So what is Seabin?

Seabin is a project. It is a research and development branch of Australian technology innovation company Seabin, has created a floating, bucket-shaped trash bin for use at marinas, private pontoons, residential lakes, inland waterways, ports harbours and yacht clubs (Johnson,2018). It can even be fitted to super yachts and motor yachts!

It?s a pretty amazing system that has been designed to catch everything from trash to oil to fuel spills to detergents, with the goal of preventing ocean pollution (Johnson,2018). If we can catch all the trash that?s near shore before it moves too far off the coast, we can ultimately help keep trash from moving to and becoming part of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (Johnson,2018).

It sounds too good to be true? Right? Luckily, Seabin is a reality. It?s something that can be implemented everywhere now to reduce ocean pollution (Johnson,2018).

Think of it this way, if every dock in the world and every pontoon boat and every yacht and so on had a Seabin, what would the effects be? Not only would you get all the trash out of the water, but plastics that get taken away by the water and consequently drown and kill animals like whales and turtles would be a thing of the past. There would not be no more fish or mammals dying due to eating plastics and trash. The fish we catch out of our waters would be healthier, heartier and ultimately better for us to eat (Johnson,2018).

    Hi Yves!

I completely agree with that you have mentioned in your comment. Plastic industries should me stressed in the collection and recycling of plastic. The enforcement of Seabin can transcend to land (or LandBin :D) and this puts a positive image for future generations to follow.

    Many thanks!

    Hi Rosa!

it is true, after reading through your report how seabin works, I see, it is needed everywhere. not only in boats or at beach, but also at our home. to make plastic pollination a history thing so that the upcoming generations would have something to write starting like: long ago there was plastic pollution on this beautiful planet we live in....... bla bla bla bla bla....... we have to take initiative in teaching the effects of plastics on our environment, and enforce plastic industries to make sure they can receive and recycle their products after being used.

thank you Rosa, I appreciate your effort.

that was a good staff to read!

    Hi Gyeongrin!

Yes, the imapct that plastic has placed on the ocean is immense and this new method of ocean clean-up is one way that they are achieving the reduction of ocean trash.

    Hello Rosa
The best way to protect the sea water will be to prevent people form trashing stuffs in to it. However we still have the problem with cleaning up what we have done to the oceans in our past days. And these methods, such as the seabins collaborated with nowadays techs seems like an awesome way to figure this out. Thanks for introducing new methods to us!

    Hi Joon!

Yes! I too found this piece of information to be in lightening and most educative. I believe seabins should be global franchise. It would do great to help minimise the waste at sea.

    Many thanks!

Hello Rosa, it makes me think of 'Ocean Cleanup' project started in 2013 by Boyan Slat.
As there are too many various types of trash and junks all around in the ocean, it is inevitable for all of us to face them utterly. To engage in this problem directly, we need seabins and volunteer works of people on the seashore, which is the checkpoint for trash from land or main continent to move out to sea and ocean.
Thanks for sharing a rare and nice news about the ocean cleaning project! :)
