Environmental justice is certainly a new topic for us. In the present situation it is a very important thing to consider. In layman terms, environmental justice can be defined as the fair and equitable distribution of all the natural resources and opportunity to everyone. In this sense, environmental discrimination can be simply understood as the discrimination of the minorities regarding the environmental resources. The cases of environmental discrimination have been seen in many places and we cannot deny the fact they exist in Nepal also. Since environmental justice refers to fair treatment of all so my report today will be regarding the environmental justice received by the wildlife of Nepal through the construction of wildlife crossing bridges. Construction activities are always needed if we wish to advance our civilization. But while doing so the principle of sustainability should never be forgotten. Highway roads construction through the forest area have a high impact on the wildlife of those forest. When a road is constructed through the middle of the forest it has high impact on the habitat and bio diversity of that area. When the condition worsens it may also result in the extinction or endangerment of the species. This things have never been taken into account while doing construction works. In case of Nepal, it is fair to say that the concept of sustainable development is hardly undertaken in any development works. This is creating a huge injustice to the nature and bio diversity. The most recently proposed East-west Highway and Postal Road, other roads including the North-south road, proposed railway, proposed BSF road of India and several local motorable roads pass through the Terai Arc Landscape area which includes the natural habitat of species like Bengal Tiger, one horned rhinoceros. So to solve this and provide some form of justice to this poor species the work of constructing underpasses and wildlife crossings have been started. Such construction work provides a great means of dealing with the problem of encroachment of the habitat of wildlife. Construction of wildlife crossings near the Chitwan National Park can be seen as a similar example. Proposals for the construction of similar underpasses and crossings over other such areas are now being put forward. So to conclude I think that this can be a perfect example of environmental justice and I do believe that the term environmental justice should not only be limited to humans but also to the other creatures and life forms so that an equitable fair future and present for all of us is created. |
