Youth Empowerment in Environmental Stewardship

Lilongwe is the largest city in Malawi with 670,000 people growing by a rate of 4.3 percent per year, one of the makes fastest growing regions in the country. But with that growth comes major challenges dealing with waste management. The city has experienced the influx of rural immigration in the recent past years due to anticipation of good life in urban areas through employment and businesses; no wonder the city registers an urbanisation rate of about eight percent making it one of the fastest growing cities in the world. However, this rapid urbanisation has come with effects both positive and negative. The biggest hit falls under the environment sector in terms of sanitation in solid and liquid waste management. Monitoring and evaluation office of community servings investment promotion statics show that the city generates 109 tonnes of solid waste per day; of the total, 15 percent derives from industries, 25 percent from commercial areas, 20 percent from hospitals and 40 percent from residential areas.

On June 27, 2018 I conducted an event about youth empowerment in environmental stewardship. The event involved different primary schools around Lilongwe. In believing that the children are the future leaders, it is more vital to teach kids about the impact of poor waste management. This event was conducted to provide youth with knowledge on the role in environmental management as this planet belongs to the next generation. This event evolved public speech to the youths. The objective was to ?Empower the Youth Involvement in Environmental Stewardship. During the event the schools kids had fun with various actives;

  •          Environmental games
  •          Cleaning up around the facility where the event was held
  •          Making eco-bricks
  •          Short lesson about waste management

The students were so excited and they expressed gratitude and pleasure. The event was so wonderful, educative and motivation to the students and everybody enjoyed the event.

    Hello Andrew
    I totally agree to the line in the report saying
    'In believing that the children are the future leaders, it is more vital to teach kids about the impact of poor waste management.'
    Youth are our future and it is important to inspire, educate them about the environmental status and issues that need more caring!
    Thanks for the report :)

    Hello Andrew, quite many students seem to participate in this campaign and series of various programs for environmental stewardship.
    Programs such as games and making something must have made students participate in this well :)
    Thanks for sharing your experience
