Biodiversity and Endangered Species in the Philippines - May 2018

by Bam Azores | 17-07-2018 18:54 recommendations 0

The Philippines is not only Biodiverse, it is Megadiverse.  Being Megadiverse is to be extremely Biodiverse. Biodiversity simply speaks of the variety of life or species found in one place on earth. In as afar as species biodiversity is concerned, the Philippines is one of the 17 megadiverse countries mostly found in the tropics as identified way back on 1998 by the Conservation International. This is so because the Philippines is blessed not only with rich diversity of species both flora and fauna, but significantly has many endemic species found nowhere else in the world. Here are some known endemic and/or endangered  species:

Giant Clams or Taklobo is the largest living bivalve mollusk, which can be found on the shores of the Philippines. These clams can grow up to 4 feet and can weigh as much as 200 kilograms. It is now considered an endangered marine animal due to poaching and harvesting for food and as a decoration.

The Palawan fruit bat (Palawan flying fox) is a species listed as vulnerable whose numbers are declining due to habitat loss and hunting. They are found in forests of Palawan, Balabac and Busuanga here in the Philippines.

The Philippine flat-headed frog is a jungle toad also found in the areas of Busuanga, Culion and Palawan. It is also threatened by loss of their natural habitats such as forests and rivers.

The Philippine dwarf kingfisher is a species of bird in the Alcedinidae family that is endemic to the Philippines in the areas of Polillo, Alabat and Catanduanes in the big island of Luzon.  This tiny kingfisher is now listed as vulnerable and is threatened by deforestation.

Actually there is a place that I want to visit here in the Philippines.  It is called Del Carmen Mangrove in Siargao Island.  This has been recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the country. 27 out of the 70 mangrove species in the world are represented. It is home to many endangered species of flora and fauna one of them being the saltwater crocodile, said to be the largest land and river-dwelling predator in the world.

    Hi Bam!

I see you've looked deep into the monthly themes events for this one. The Philippines does hold a vast variety of species. All of which are precious and a blessing to the country.

I really enjoyed reading your report, it brought back a lot of nostalgic moments of when pur fellow ambassadors wrote on the issue.

    Lovely report.
