University of Birmingham:one of the UK's very best green spaces

by Arushi Madan | 19-07-2018 08:01 recommendations 1

Dear all,

I am glad to share with you that my university i.e. The University of Birmingham's Edgbaston Campus has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the country.

It joins 16 other green spaces awarded recognition in Birmingham.

The Campus is among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that this week receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

University of Birmingham is absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for second year. The university knows how much quality green spaces matter to students, staff and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining our Edgbaston Campus to such a high standard.

Green Flag Awards Scheme

The Green Flag Awards Scheme is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

Keep Britain Tidy is a leading environmental charity, inspiring people to be litter-free, to waste less and to live more. It runs programmes including Eco-Schools, the Green Flag Award for parks and green spaces and the Blue Flag/ Seaside Awards for beaches.

Any green space that is accessible to the public is eligible to enter for a Green Flag Award.  Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag Award status.  A Green Flag Community Award recognises quality sites managed by voluntary and community groups. Green Heritage Site accreditation is judged on the treatment of the site's historic features and the standard of conservation.

Environment and Sustainability at University of Birmingham

Being sustainable is the only sensible choice in today's world. University of Birmingham is working to reduce its negative environmental and social effects, whilst maximising the positive impacts our research and learning have on the world.

Sustainability at the University of Birmingham is the responsibility of all students and staff community and is embedded across our Colleges and Professional Services. The Sustainability Task Group (STG) oversees the development of policies and practices for sustainability and is complemented by College Environmental Committees who formulate their own plans. Academics and Professional Services staff work together and alongside one another to make Birmingham greener.

Our university is helping to find solutions to global challenges such as climate change, through efficient travel, alternative fuels and energy storage. We at UoB are striving to have huge positive impacts through our research whilst trying to minimise the carbon and other effects produced along the way.

The green spaces are the best environments that facilitate the assimilation of the courses to the students. The student learns easily without being embarrassed and quickly assimilates these courses. We need to work together to get several other universities to think about these kinds of things. Congratulations to your university
