Despite the fact that Somaliland and the countries in the Horn of Africa are familiar with socio-political and cultural dynamics; conflicts arising from natural resources like charcoal and land are the main contributors to the long-term problems in Somaliland. Environmental peacebuilding integrates natural resource management in conflict prevention, mitigation, resolution and recovery to build resilience in communities affected by conflict. Said this, communities in Somaliland and Somalia largely use charcoal as domestic energy for cooking, and for other chores. In addition, most of Somaliland regions are semi-arid and few trees are available which now experience heavy destruction not only vegetation cover but also threaten species nearby. It has been reported that recent violent conflicts in some parts of Somaliland including Ceel-Afwayn Clan clash are the result of some form of natural resources in particular land conflict which does not show scarcity of land in the area but also fuels other social-political tensions that are active in the Eastern regions of the country. In essence, violent conflicts escalating from the natural resources in Somaliland are different and hence have different consequences which need to be identified before they result more serious problems that affect the economic and social situation in the country. In conclusion, it is more appropriate to pay attention to the different factors fueling conflicts and also their sources so that the whole process of dealing with challenges. |

Thank you Mohamed for introducing us to yet another aspect of environment- Environmental Peace Building. Sharing of resources should be regulated well to avoid conflict and socio-economic or political problems.

Hello Mohamed, it reminds me of problems that other countries are facing, especially the countries in South Western area of Africa. Resource accessibility affects and means the power of certain countries, arousing civil wars or additional bloody collisions in their lands, too.
Hope such problems get solved out and peace treaties get passed :)

Hello Mohamed
The conflict in achieving certain natural resources gets bigger as it enters the social-political fields. environment peace building seems to be of great importance in preventing severe conflicts.

Great duty representing Somalia. Fighting over resources should stop.

Somalia is our neighbour to the northeast. It's sad to think about what happened there especially because Somalia was a green haven before all the conflict. But I am confident that things will get better.
