ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDE SOLUTIONS TO PLASTIC WASTE IN GHANA

by Isaac Abugri | 18-08-2018 20:12 recommendations 0

There was a discussion on UTV (a television station) on 20th of April 2018 with the caption: PLASTIC WASTE LEVY: GOVERNMENT UNABLE TO TRACE GH100M.

This is a discouragement to all who are fighting for proper regulations in the plastic economy or those aiming at #PlasticfreeGhana. While the plastic would end up in the drains, Money could only end up in the pocket of people and this puts accountability of government in question.

That notwithstanding, Earth Day 2018 was marked with a lot of activities by civil society organizations across the country and worldwide, predominantly by young people with the aim to promote sustainable lifestyles in all corners of the earth.

Following the exhibition on Earth Day and the March for Science, Desmond Alugnoa, a member of Green Africa Youth Organization, had the privilege to be invited, to talk to head pastors and workers of the Presbyterian Church, Osu on the need for the church as a body to contribute to the issues of plastic pollution from a religious perspective.

Ghanaians are exceptionally religious individuals and show regard to God's creation yet the issue of plastic contamination is yet to be organized by most religious bodies as one that annihilates the earth, the main home we have and if there is such time to begin this battle, at that point it is presently. At last, everybody commended the possibility of the "GAYO bottle", a biodegradable reusable water bottle with a longer lifespan which can be used on the water dispenser as against plastic disposable cups.

Let us take initiatives, let us live sustainable lifestyles and let us discourage corrupt practices in governance.

Hello Isaac, plastic disposal problem in Ghana seems very tricky as you mentioned in your report. Edible types of plastic matters were invented and came out to the market, but it still needs to go a long way of tests and public acknowledgment enhancement. Though we cannot live without use of plastic, it is mandatory for all of us to make 'proper use' of it. Being sustainable and clean is not hard task, but to get rid of our thoughtless consumption pattern and our irresponsible disposal must be in prior task to make it.
    Thanks for your report!
