Changes for the Future: Green Policies to change in order to change the world

by Aaditya Saha | 21-10-2018 08:44 recommendations 0

Introducing policies is an effective way to change people¡¯s habits. If I could add some policy to help the environment, I would introduce an additional tariff on plastic bags. This tariff would target big corporations and companies to stop them from their usage of single-use plastic bags in stores for consumers to take home after shopping. Currently, European countries like Germany or Sweden tax consumers for plastic bags. While it is effective at reducing plastic waste, it hurts poor people who can¡¯t afford to pay the tax on single-use plastic bags and customers who forget to bring their reusable bags. If the government taxed corporations instead, then there is a chance that corporations would stop to stop producing single-use plastic bags, and force customers to bring their reusable bags when going shopping.

In addition, I believe we should have environmental education mandated for every public school in the country. The US has a DARE program, in which students learn about not using drugs. In the same way, people should learn from a young age how to grow sustainable habits and reduce their environmental footprint. Starting for a young age, we can teach our future to have sustainable habits.

    Hello Aaditya
When one policy is implemented to change people's action based on monetary factors, a complimentary or aiding system should be implemented prior to the policy so that people would actually have no problem in following the policy. And also I do agree with the importance of education so that youth could bring greener visions to this society!
    Thanks for sharing :)

Hello Aaditya, using plastic bags and forcing people to pay for it trigger problems and problems, so on and on. As you said, the poor cannot take their basic rights as other civilians do when they need to pay for plastic bag usage everytime they buy and use.
What I thought was about implementing educational support policy to the public : promoting and teaching children and students how to make stylish shopping bag or customized version of it. By doing so, they can make up their own shopping bags and decorate it upon their lifestyle and expense limitation. As a result, using plastic bag would be prevented, devoting to the total loss of its usage level in the end.
Thanks for your report, it made me think of alternatives and methods that we can suggest to the public!

Hi Aaditya! I share your point of view: it is necessary to influence corporations first of all. I fully agree with the need for a state programme of environmental education for the population.
    Thanks for the report!
