Inclusion of Environmental Education to School Curriculum

by Israel Adeoye | 31-10-2018 07:04 recommendations 0

With the current environmental issues facing our world and the discovery of the significant roles youths can play in protecting our environment and preventing it from worse situations, I think it is high time environmental education was included into school curriculum.

Coating the usual saying, ¡°youth are the leaders of tomorrow¡±. With this knowledge that children and youths are potential leaders and captains of industries, it is necessary that they are well educated on environmental issues early enough so that as they come up to take leadership positions whether politically or socially, they aware of their responsibility to protecting the global environment.

Inclusion of environmental education will result to a more effective way of informing the youths the danger of environmental pollution and its deadly impact our lives and property. Informing them at such stage will captivate them and such information will grow with them.

It is observed that a good number of youths has little or no knowledge about their environment let alone their roles to protecting it. Such education would make students to be informed of the various aspects of the environment such as water, land, air, climate and the associated pollutions. It will train youths in developing eco-friendly attitudes and culture them to develop good moral behaviours that will  improve the environment. Also, they would be exposed to various projects and developments that have been executed both locally and globally by individuals, organisations and governments to protect the environment. They would also be exposed more widely to past achievements (like the Montreal Protocol), current achievements and the future achievements that the world expects from them.

Educating the youths in school on environmental situations will also assist the government in proper execution and implementation of environmental laws and polices.

Though some environmental topics are addressed in subjects such as Basic Science, Agricultural Science and Geography, a subject such as ¡°Environmental Science¡± that will absolutely deal with environmental issues should be included in schools.

Environmental education to school curriculum is a big way to effectively involving the youths in protecting the environment.

Hello Israel, getting exposed to various environmental issues and problems is important but what's important more is 'how students can understand and approach to solve/prevent the problems' in the long run (I think, personally). From my personal experience so far, middle and high school students loved providing short but well-planned experiment explaining global warming and atmospheric change on visual. However, children in elementary school did not like experiment but games that they easily got caught up with them.
Defining specific educational objectives differing upon grades will truly lead students and young generation to become leaders and self-directed people aftermath.
    Thanks for your report!

    Hello Israel
The usual saying, ¡°youth are the leaders of tomorrow' is very much right!
If we see people as human resources, appropriate environmental education should be provided for the right nurture of these resources.
And, as these education weren't embedded in the educational curriculum, it would be nice that this could be standardized and included in youth education!
    Thanks for the report!

    Hi Isarael!

I agree with you that children should be educated at an early stage about the nev= environmental issues affecting their surroundings. It makes not reasonable sense that courses of environmental management and environmental governance are done in university and not begin at least from schoolgirl level. If we really say that children and the youth are the future than we should do everything we possibly can to make sure that equipped with necessary knowledge to tackle the problems at hand.

    Thank you for reporting Israel!

    Nice report! Israel
Environmental education can really play a good role in involving kids and letting them know today's situation and how drastic our future will be if we keep neglecting. Also, how there simple actions and habits can matter. :)
