Plastic Pollution: The new subject of plastic tax policy

by Xolani Mnisi | 31-10-2018 22:54 recommendations 0

In pursuit of a commune, free shared-globalised world and sustainable living, all governments, business, organisations and institutions anchored by environmental bureaucrats have accounted to a bold approach of environmental conservation.

The United Nations and eco/ green organisation backed-up by environmentalists and activities are on verge of challenging against plastic pollution, a major result of concerning climate change. This, to combat such heads of state have all some concurred upon adopting a strategy to develop mechanisms, strategies and measures of erasing plastic pollution.

In South Africa, in pursuit to protect herself ocean reserves and resources from rising from the level of a high number of plastic pollution also found in rivers, streams, road-paving sides, and  the ocean thereof, the government has undertaken to the option of adopting a climate tax, preferably known as the ¡°Carbon tax¡±.

In such sense, such arises from the economy development policy: National Development Plan encapsulating the Operation Phakisa (maritime) policy. This ocean economy policy has identified water pollution as a barrier to superfluous goal achievement. In the honour to reignite, restore and protect the ocean and overall economy sectors from pollution, the government has thus introduced the plastic tax policy.

Seconded by National Treasury, the policy is brought forward by the Department of Environmental Affairs and expected to be channelled to be established as an Act of parliament of the Republic of South Africa Constitution(Act 108 of 1996) and be officially mandated in ament parliament seeks to serve as conservation and protection strategy. The tax is structured in so being as a remunerative element paid by corporates and industry which produce, use plastic, as those which pollute heavily into the environment.

Public citizens and corporates are also subjected to contribute through plastic levy.

Corporate s are subjected are those which manufacture and abuse environmental standards.

Suggests to be revenue, the government has structured the financial reserve to be positioned for the following causes:

¡¤         Establishing and maintaing refinery infrastructure, processes and procedures

¡¤         Securing both heavy and light plastic manufacturing firms to be less plastic reliant

¡¤         Speeding on research and investigation for alternative plastic use

¡¤         Fast-track service delivery infrastructure and services to abolish plastic burning at recycling and residential dumping zones

¡¤         Creation of green urban non pollutant zones

¡¤         Adoption and adaption of new scientific and technological approaches to plastic use

¡¤         Cleaning identified plastic pollutant residential and commercial zones

Such stance has resulted for both appreciation and discrepancies. However, the adoption of such is motive to restore, conserve and protect the economy, environments, policies and its environmental welfare and wellbeing.

The government of South Africa believes to encourage a wellbeing and just environmental legalised (constitution-defined (Environmental Act [24]) and understood state by a plastic tax levy policy.

Hello Xolani, unfortunately, carbon tax policy is not implemented and popular in many countries due to complex calculation methods and tracking carbon dioxide from the overall manufacture and consumption procedure to individual products.
However, plastic bags and other products made up of plastic are usually manufactured in a huge industrial platform, which means tracking the amount of plastic pollution and expected amount of the total emission are possible to do so.
Likewise, implementing and supplementing carbon tax laws into plastic pollution policies would make a difference!
Giving a shot to make a difference and better policy would decrease the current pollution level from plastic garbage.
    Thanks for your report!
